All the warnings about undercooked meat may leave you concerned about the safety of eating your favorite dishes. Assuage your worries by inserting about 2 inches of this slender meat thermometer into your turkey or steak. The tool registers an instant internal meat temperature on an easy-to-read, shatterproof, analog dial that is about the size of a quarter. Because the thermometer reads temperatures between 0 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be used to determine how thawed or cool meats removed from the freezer or refrigerator are at the start of cooking, how evenly meats are cooking in a microwave oven, and if meats cooked on any other heat source are done. The plastic sleeve, when held horizontally, also acts as a heat-safe holder for the thermometer when using the probe over an open flame, and as a wrench for rotating and recalibrating the thermometer head should it get slightly off-kilter. The thermometer should be cleaned by hand with soap and water or alcohol for sterilization, and is covered by a lifetime warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

Expect to calibrate this every time you use it. Put in ice water and measure the temperature. Then put in boiling water and measure the temperature. Use the sleeve to adjust the nut on the bottom of the thermometer. This makes the thermometer more reliable than a more expensive thermometer that can't be calibrated.

I prefer these old fashioned thermometers. The battery ones to go out on you. So my son said it works great.

Our digital thermometers always get ruined due to the LCD screen, so this has become our new standard for our commercial kitchen. Less expensive but lasts a lot longer (haven't had one fail yet). Easy to clean and sanitize without worrying about ruining the device.

I had a Taylor Instant Read thermometer for years that I used to froth milk for lattes and it was much faster at detecting the current temp than this unit. The text/numbers on this thermometer are also stupidly small and it's pretty hard to read.

Easy to calibrate if/when needed. Bought this as a gift for my brother with no worries. He is happy with it. No need for fancy, expensive ones, this is just fine.

This thermometer is accurate and easy to use,but a 1 inch dial is somewhat difficult to read at times!! Wish it was around an inch and a half for my personal use!!
