There's a piece of foam on the bottom, which when I've ordered a similar product before should make a somewhat soft and grippy surface to not slide around your desk, but on these that I ordered the foam is too thin and the outer metal rim is what sits on the desk. Just beware, it'll slide around much easier and possibly scratch up surfaces since the foam doesn't reach down. Otherwise it functions as expected, relatively smooth motion and good grip strength (though the surface texture could be gripper maybe).
