I've used the aluminum and plastic versions and both are fine for most applications. The Aluminum backed tends to run faster than the plastic but can be cut even smaller if needed. The plastic cannot be cut without flaking off the coating.

We purchased the plastic backed silica gel plates. These plates are less than half the cost of what we pay through bigger suppliers. Shipping is prompt and communication with seller was excellent. They work well in our General Chemistry teaching lab and fluoresce under UV. An excellent value and one we were happy to find.
