I'm an adult re-learning to play the violin I first learned as a child.I've tried a few mutes already. One was a lighter weight rubber mute, similar to this one. I liked it, but it wasn't dampening sound enough. The other was a rubber-coated metal mute. It was effective, and didn't distort sound much (according to my body-mounted electronic tuner), but it sat REALLY high on the bridge, and was really heavy. This mute is the perfect combination of those two! It sits snug & low on the bridge, and because it's made from a heavier-weight rubber, it's stiffer & does a better job at dampening sound without any distortion. :)Highly recommend this for all who practice in apartments, in houses with close neighbors, or roommates/spouses/etc who don't want to hear your instrument at full volume.

This mute was just what I was looking for. It deadens the sound enough to keep it in my practice room and not the rest of the house. It definitely does change the nature of the sound some, but it lets me practice my fingering without disturbing others.

It works very well, when installed completely onto the bridge. Some of the resonant tones go away, but it makes practicing much more comfortable. I cannot compare this to other mutes, as this is the only type I have tried. My roomates said it made an enormous difference in the volume coming from my room.

I ordered for both a 1/2 size violin for my daughter, and a 4/4 size for my 14" Viola. They work great on my daughter's. I can still hear the notes she's playing. It was definitely a lot easier putting it on my daughter's 1/2 size violin, versus my viola (not sure why). It was a much tighter fit over my viola bridge and I had to move it to the very edge of the A string. On my daughter's violin, the mute was just lowering the volume. On mine, it changed the volume, but I also feel like the strings are not vibrating as much, maybe because it's right next to the D and A string? On the G and D strings (as can be seen in the picture), there's still a gap, which is how it looks on my daughter's. Maybe I need a bigger size?

Mutes the volume without messing up the sound. The player can barely hear the difference. The person a room away, or an apartment away, can really hear a difference in loudness.Great for those late night practices!

Didn't mute well enough for me, but worked better than the "durable chrome metal silencer". The Ultra rubber mute does help, and the tone of this new violin actually sounded a little better with it, actually, but it sounded much much worse immediately after taking it off. It seems to be a thing. This mute also marked my brand new bridge with black scuffs. :( Not cool. For my needs, the I found a weighty metal practice mute that sits ontop of the bridge (rather than clamping around it) that seems to do best, so far, for actually dampening out the most noise, although it loses a lot in resonance). This Ultra mute just doesn't dampen enough for my apartment.

While the sound difference is notice-able, I was expecting something muuuch quieter. If you know what a mute sounds like, the quality and make of this one seems good and was recommended in a youtube video I watched. But if you are trying to practice outside, next to a neighbors window, or something like that -- then this isn't going to save the day.
