I first tried using this wire locator the same way I use my telephone/network toner (which means I placed the transmitter leads on the two conductors I was trying to locate.) THAT DIDN'T WORK and I thought the unit was useless.Fortunately I had seen a few videos where the person connected one transmitter lead to the underground wire and the other transmitter lead to a screwdriver stuck in the ground. I tried that method and amazingly I started hearing the signal and I was able to easily track the location of the wire underground. The other important strategy is to gently swing the receiver back and forth perpendicular to the path of the wire (once you find a starting point.) You will hear the signal to the left of the wire, then it will go silent, then you will hear the signal to the right of the wire. Your wire is located directly below that silent area that was between the two peaks in signal. Using this strategy I was able to correctly locate my broken direct burial electrical cable (about 24" below the surface.)If you do these to things, I think you'll be as satisfied with this tool as I was. Happy Hunting.

Received the unit and it was packaged well and came with a nice canvas tool pouch to hold it and all the accessories. However when I went to charge it, the charge cable would not fit in the connector, which was good because it forced me to open the battery cover where I found the battery pack was puffy, not form fitting like in the other half of the tool. My understanding is that puffy lithium batteries means that they are primed for failure, usually in an exo-thermal manner.Returning unit as DOA.

We bought the TUIREL Underground Wire Locator even though reviews were mixed about it working to find dog invisible fence breaks. While it found the wire very well, the signal kept dropping out everywhere and we knew the whole fence wasn't compromised. Also, while it did find the wire the tone continued to sound for an area of about a foot wide. We gave it a two star rating because it would find a fairly approximate location of the wire and because it appears to be a nice unit which included a pouch to keep everything together. We did return it immediately after discovering it wouldn't work for us.

We installed a wireless dog fence. For some reason the wire around the perimeter keeps breaking. Regardless, this device has saved countless hours finding the break. It works perfect for a reasonable cost. My 10 year old son does it on his own now.

Worked good finding the break in my underground dog fence. Stuck a screwdriver in the ground and attached the ground clamp to it. Unplugged the dog fence and put the other clamp on one end of the fence wire. There is a learning curve but once you figure it out it works great. When following the wire there is a loud high pitch noise it makes. You can walk swinging the sensor in the air and it will be a strong sound. I found that past the break I could still find the wire but had to have the sensor on the ground to find it. So the point where you go from the strong noise just walking freely to where you have to put the sensor to the ground is the point of the break. When trying to first find the break I was going backwards dragging the sensor across the ground and tediously following the wire then all of a sudden the sound started blasting, so apparently I started in the wrong direction and just because it was broken that end of the wire will still have some signal. Once I figured out what I was listening for it is actually pretty easy to use. The directions are okay but you have to employ a little common sense too.

I took a chance on buying a relatively cheap unit, knowing that I might regret it. But it worked great for tracing my 24 VAC underground sprinkler electrical cables and finding the control valves. (Some of the valve box covers were completely overgrown with grass and I misplaced my sprinkler system map from about 20 years ago.) This was the first time I've ever used a line detector, so I had to actually break down and read the directions, which weren't the best (or worst) I've encountered. Buried in the instruction manual is a warning to turn off any higher voltage (over 48 VAC) circuits that you might encounter in your search area (to keep from frying the detector). I missed one (120 VAC), but it didn't cause a problem - I just moved the unit away quickly, flipped the offending breaker off, and continued on with no problems. I had some questions as I read the manual, but the answers became obvious once I got started. I was able to trace the entire length of the cable, which was approx. 950 feet long. So overall, a good buy; paid for itself on the first use!

Can't beat the price point and it got the job done! Saved me tons of time as I have roughly 600' of invisible pet fence wire on the perimeter of my property. The key is setting the signal level and the receiver volume level correctly; otherwise the signal volume that you detect when searching can get a little confusing. Great buy $39 vs. $109 for the name brand RFA-590 that the mfr/manual of my invisible fence recommends.
