I have 9 of the MIC1509S detectors installed in my house. They are easy to install and the notion of the 10-year battery sounds great, but, I’ve already had to replace 4 of these detectors in just over 5 years.

Each single unit detects both (smoke & carbon monoxide). Bought 4 (one on each floor + garage). They work great and they Don't TALK!!

My entire house is hardwired with this model. Nice that it has the CO2 detector as well. No false alarms and no worrying about a battery.

I upgraded our smoke alarms with the USI 10 year battery alarms. With the added CO along with smoke detection, I feel secure with this unit in our furnace room. Green LED lets you know the unit is active and the smoke detection technology reduces the number of nuisance alarms. Installation was as easy as replacing 3 wire nuts and a new mounting plate.

These smoke detectors are awful. I purchased a dozen or so because they were what was in the house that we bought, and you just replace the detector instead of the batteries. I can't say how good they are at detecting smoke or carbon monoxide, because we've never had either in the house, but they are EXCEPTIONAL at picking extremely inopportune times to trigger false early-detection alarms, and usually in the middle of the night...and then you have to get up, find which detector is beeping (because it beeps at 60 second intervals *sometimes*) and either hope that wafting it with a towel gets it to stop beeping, or else you must completely uninstall the detector and eliminate it from your home. Since there are no "replaceable" batteries, and because you can't otherwise turn it off except by using the destructive key (included!), it's just going to keep going on and on and on.Seriously, of the twelve or so detectors I purchased with a "10-year life", I've discarded approximately half of them in the two and a half years since purchase and install. Additionally, I've now discarded two of those detectors office-space style because of how egregiously offensive they've become, including the latest one about ten minutes ago that decided to start a false-alarm sequence in my 3-month old's nursery on the first night in three that I finally thought I was going to get a half-decent night's sleep, and yet here I am, at 11:52 pm, writing this review, to hopefully warn you all to not touch this product with a 39 and a half foot pole.

Bought these to replace several older USI alarms. All of our alarms are wired together so that any one will set them all off. With the older alarms, it was hard to silence all the alarms after an alert. These newer alarms reset very well. These new alarms seem to be slightly more sensitive to smoke (which is a good thing). One word of caution - USI has changed the mounting rings so that we couldn't use the old rings with the new alarms. However, the new rings are easily installed, so it's not a big deal.

Had this a few months with no complaints. Found out it worked tonight when my husband made dinner...It’s very loud and startling. It did shut off after a minute or so though so all is well.

I had an old smoke / CO detector that seemed to be signaling low battery. Turned out the battery was fine. Website said replace after 10 years because the sensor deteriorates. (True that it will deteriorate, but I didn't look up the half-life of whatever radio-isotope is used in the sensor to see whether that had any relationship to 10 years.) So I purchased what looked to be the closest model to the old one, and this was it. Came with wiring harness that had sockets in the right place, but different coupling mechanism. Being too lazy to turn off the power, I tried the old harness in the new device, and it mated properly. So that's good. What's "new" about the new device is that the backup battery is no longer replaceable -- it's said to last 10 years, but your mileage may vary depending on the reliability of your utility company. AND ... (drum roll) ... the unit is now programmed to put itself out of service after 10 years, so there is no option about replacing. Planned obsolescence at it's finest! All that said (somewhat tongue in cheek), this is something that you both want to be very reliable but never have to find out whether or not it is. So if tomorrow I severely burn the toast and it doesn't go off, I'll re-rate it 1 star, but if tonight it wakes me up to tell me that I closed the fireplace flue prematurely, I'll up it to 7. Hence, 4 stars on average, with hopes of a very low standard deviation.
