Home dial-up Internet service doesn't have to be slow. U.S. Robotics' external 56K faxmodem (model USR325686E) is designed to make your dial-up connection as fast and easy-to-use as possible. An e-mail with attachments will fly from your out box up to 50-percent faster than it would from competing devices. Quick Connect lets you establish your connection rapidly, so you spend less time simply getting going.

Worried about missing calls while you're online? Let that one go: a U.S. Robotics feature called Internet Call Notification (ICN) lets you screen incoming calls so you can take the important ones.

Even better, Modem on Hold lets you take calls while online without dropping your Internet connection--there's no need for a second phone line.

The modem's ControlCenter lets you customize your upload and download speeds--choose to surf the Web at top speed or to send e-mail attachments faster. Built-in line-probing technology helps you stay connected even under the worst line conditions, and the modem is software-upgradeable, too, so you can download new features and enhancements as they become available.

Included software turns your computer into a feature-rich fax machine--send faxes from any Windows application and receive incoming faxes at any time. The software also supports delayed and broadcast faxing.

The modem is compatible with Windows XP, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Linux, and DOS.

What's in the Box
U.S. Robotics 56K Faxmodem, AC power adapter, RJ-11 phone cord (7 feet), quick-installation guide, installation CD-ROM.

Note: call waiting and Caller ID require service from your local phone company.

From the Manufacturer

U.S. Robotics has been building the world's best modems for over 25 years, and now we're bringing you the latest in modem technology. The U.S. Robotics 56K* external faxmodem combines the superior performance and reliability of a controller-based modem with the convenience of V.92 technology. V.92 technology lets you send e-mail and attachments faster, get online quicker, and even take incoming phone calls without losing your Internet connection. Getting a better connection is as easy as the three-step installation procedure.

V.92 offers exciting features and improvements over the old V.90 standard. These features may not immediately be available with all ISPs. (Contact your ISP to find out when they will be updating their servers to include V.92 technology.) V.92 offers:

Modem on Hold
Modem on Hold "suspends" your online session for incoming calls and returns to your online activities after your conversations without redialing. Please note that call-waiting service from your telephone company is required.

Quick Connect
Quick Connect "remembers" line conditions from the previous session, bypasses portions of the training sequence, and gets you online faster. Reduce your dial-up connection time as much as 50 percent!

V.PCM
This enhancement makes the online experience faster and better for those who send information instead of just Web surfing. If you're a gamer, you'll be able to send your commands at greater speed than your opponents who have outdated modems! V.PCM Upstream reaches upstream speeds up to 48 Kbps and lets you choose either the fastest downstream speed (up to 53 Kbps) or a "balanced" connection of downstream and upstream communication.

Whether or not your ISP currently supports the new V.92 technology, you can take advantage of ICN (Internet Call Notification) immediately! ICN allows you to see who's attempting to call while you're spending time online. Since V.92 is backward compatible to older technologies, you'll be ready to enjoy the benefits of V.92 as soon as your ISP upgrades!

*Capable of receiving at up to 56 Kbps and sending at up to 48 Kbps (or 31.2 Kbps with V.90 server). Due to FCC regulations, receiving speeds are limited to 53 Kbps. Actual speeds may vary. V.92 and V.90 features require compatible phone line and support from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). U.S. Robotics modems featuring V.92 enhancements are backward compatible and will negotiate the highest possible speed when connecting to an ISP.

No power supply was included in box with modem, had to order a power supply separately after modem was delivered. No mention of power supply not included in the the description of this item.

This modem does not work with windows 8 as advertised. Expensive cable to hook up to my laptop from modem. Old fashioned buttons, etc. Real loser. Software down load as required will not run on windows 8.

This was a great deal at the time. They satisfied my needs for a customer at the time but now they have moved on to Internet communications and I have about six of these units still in the box.If any one needs them they are available.

I've been using two of these modems for about a month now without any complaints. We use each modem for each retail POS system at my place of business. We gave up high speed credit card processing for dial up. The modems have been working fine thus far. We've had a couple of connection errors during some transactions but nothing to concerning. I.e. lost carrier. Not sure what that means. Like a previous reviewer said, the modems have a small footprint which is nice if you are tight on space. The setup and install was very easy too. The only negative I see to the whole system is the required use of a serial cable. I had to order two serial cables as the USR 5686E DOES NOT provide a serial cable in the box. For the price of these modems, USR should supply a cable.

I have to use this modem to communicate with traffic signal controllers. It works and is very reliable. Its easy to set up and small so does not take a lot of space inside the cabinet. Can't go wrong with this one.

This is the standard fax modem by US Robotics, the one we all need and use. It has been working fine, as expected, since we got it.My only comment is that you should realize that it only has a serial connection and NOT a USB connection to access your computer/server. We fortunately had a cable that would work, but were surprised when there was no USB connection as we had previously.

After several hours of trying to figure out why my brand new top of the line modem wouldn't work I was told that it had to be a US Robotics V.92 only modem, I looked everywhere but being an older model I had a very difficult time finding one, so I tried a search online and Amazon.com located one for me I was very happy to find a telephone number for the company and they overnighted my modem and it has been producing for me without any faults what so ever!

I bought my modem about 3 weeks ago after the original one in my computer quit. For the first couple of weeks it was great, relatively quick initial connection and pages seemed to load more faster and more smoothly. However, in just the past 24 hours the speaker that lets me hear the modem function has quit with no reason or indication showing in the diagnostics that there was a problem and the initial connection time has slowed down. The troubleshooting information is difficult to follow, I had a lot of problems installing the driver and to be honest there are better, more reliable brands out there that don't cost as much as this one. Very, very disappointed.
