This 1/8" NPT tap is perfect for soft metal and plastics. I purposely bought the High Carbon Steel tap because the hole I was threading into with my Cobalt HSS 1/8 NPT tap was too shallow and bottoming out. I needed a "softer" steel tap so I could grind off the first couple of threads in order to tap further in to engage more threads. This $5.00 tap (at the time of this writing) helped me avoid having to grind my $65 1/8 NPT Cobalt tap.I used this on Aluminum without any issues. I made sure to add a dab of oil here and there to make sure things cut smoothly. I would imagine this tap wouldn't have much issue cutting into soft alloys like copper or brass either. This worked for my application as intended and all in all, it's a good tap for plastic and soft metals.

I used this to make two sets of threads in stainless sheet. I wasn't sure the tool would do the job in tough stainless, but it did fine, and still seems sharp - ready for the next challenge!

I saw a lot of other reviews that gave positive marks for this die when used to tap an exhaust manifold so I bought one for that purpose. Knowing that I would probably never use it again, the lower price and reviews helped me make my choice and I am thoroughly impressed with how easy this tap made a perfect threaded hole and this tools more than sharp enough to be used again. I highly recommend it if you are not a machinists and do no need it to tap holes all day.

My old house radiator has an air vent that no 1/8 inch air vent could fit. Believe that corrosion was blocking part of the inner vent hole. This Vermont American pipe tap was the perfect solution after months of trying different options, and getting frustrated. The T-wrench that I bought didn't fit the tap, so I used a hand wrench to carefully guide and screw the tap sprayed with WD40 lubricant about 3/4 way inside the hole, which removed the corrosion. Then, I screwed the vent out. My new Varivalve air vent with a straight shaft fit in snugly, and I didn't screw in all the way which could have cracked something. Works well, was about $300 less than hiring a plumber to fix it, and am happy that the task is finally complete.

I bought a house last year with one-pipe steam. One of the vents was letting by so I tried to remove to clean with vinegar. Person before me had stripped radiator. I was kicking myself I did not leave alone.Anyway - I was in a real dilemma as now I had a steam radiator with stripped threads in middle of winter. I managed to secure a vent with a lot of Teflon tape and used zip-ties to secure to radiator frame. It was weeping a little.Anyway - ordered this baby. I used it to try and clean the threads. I was able to install new Hoffman 1A vent adequately again. I wouldn't say it was perfect - so use plenty Teflon tape. System worked like a champ with no leaks!!If you are in same predicament as I was - I would definitely give this a shot!

Used this to tap aluminum, bronze, and a steel tank, has held up great so far, great price, use the recommended drill bit, don't sink the tap all the way, test fit the pipes and connections to make sure it won't bottom out before reaching a good amount of torque, use cutting oil when possible, that's all.

Vermont American still makes really good quality bits,taps,does,etc. Even though they are now made in China (The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars). This tap worked great for the the project I was working on, it cut good clean threads and started straight without too much fiddling. I put it through some abuse (as I tend to do with tools) with no problems. You will need an 11/32" bit if you don't have one and the shank is thick so you might consider a little larger tap wrench if you are going to have to buy one anyway.

This tap is made in China. That said, it's a perfectly acceptable toolbox tap, of not terribly good finish. It cuts threads just fine, at least in good quality gray cast iron. If you want something for harder materials, you'll want a better tap.
