This is a must when replacing battery in vehicle by hooking up this gadget on the battery terminal and then into the car obd socket and then replacing the battery under the hood. Once the new battery is installed you then unhook this gadget. This preserves all the original settings in the ecm and don’t need to worry about screw ups.

This review is very positive, but has a twist in how I used this. An acquaintance had a chevy Cruz with a totally dead battery, the engine was not running, and the key was stuck in the ignition. The key would not go to the off position and the under the steering column release would not work. Then I thought of this thing. I plugged it into the car's OBD2 connector and then connected the clamps of this device to a spare motorcycle battery I have. Instantly the key was free to be removed from the ignition. I think this is money well spent.

I found the instructions to use the Vgate OBD II Memory Saver in the product description. It is important to follow the instructions carefully to avoid blowing fuses. In my case I used the 12 volt battery from my computer UPS to power the Memory Saver. When the memory saver is powered on there is a red LED that lights up. I connected the Memory saver to the ODBII socket under the dash of my Ford. When the memory saver senses that it is connected to the ODBII socket it chimes and continues to chime as long as it is connected to the socket. The chiming is your indication that your car's memory settings are saved. After I had finished changing the battery in my car I removed the positive lead from the Memory Saver and then unplugged it from my car's ODBII connector. The Vgate OBD II Memory Saver worked like a charm and saved my car's presets and memory settings.

With so many new vehicles today that require constant voltage to retain their memory, this is really a must tool to have. Eventually your 12V battery is going to die and it is so easy to replace the battery yourself. BUT most vehicles will need to have a 12 volt supply to power the memory for most of your electronics in your vehicle. SO - this is your answer. A small 12V battery attached to this and the other end plugged in to the OBD socket of your vehicle. That's it. It works great!

Changing batteries on both of our cars before winter we purchased this not to lose data. It worked great on a GMC truck. However it did not work on my jeep. We're not sure why but the jeep had to be taken into the dealer for a cost if 350 dollars to reprogram.

I am a senior who has stubbornly passed over buying later model vehicles due the the computer stuff and all the crazy options that just lend themselves to needing replacement. ANY time you need to replace the battery or disconnect the battery on vehicles that are complicated electronically and have so many thing controlled by the computer, disconnecting electrical stuff can send you to problems if you are not aware of this . LEXUS, I have two of them, one is old and in pristine condition it is a 1993 LS400. Some of the things are not DIY like in the old days, but my newer Lexus LS460L is far worse regarding doing most DIY things. I have been working on vehicles since my teen years, I was a mechanic and machinist for the USAF and the ANG for 35 years so I know about how things work, but when it comes to these cars....beware before you think about doing DIY. Do research first and that is what led me to get this tool. It does what it is supposed to do.

Did the trick. Didn't blow up my car or even kill the computer, so I'm happy. Good value for the money and did what it was to do.-No instructions, so here is my experience, then the seller's instructions.So...A) Prep your operation, whatever it is, to the point where you are ready to d/c the battery.B) See where your OBDII port is and feel where it is. Note where shorter end of the connector/female port is so you can do it by touch once you are ready to go (have the device face the correct direction.)C) Get the 12v battery you are going to use to power the device on the floormat, ready to go.D) Connect the (-) and (+) ends to that battery. Do this FIRST so the gator clips don't touch accidentallywhile it's plugged into the port, possibly shorting things out. And making you break the pledge you'dtry to clean up the language.E) Plug the device in to the port. In my case it did a short beep then slightly different soundingcontinuous beep until I disconnected it. Loud beep.F) When done, reverse: Unplug device then disconnect from battery last.Have fun!=====Seller's info:..When you want to replace your cars battery, if the power is lost to the computer, the settings are lost and reset to default. That means the vehicle may feel different when driven, and you may have to enter a security code to access the stereo.Using Vgate car memory saver when replacing your car battery will help you avoid these problems.Features:1. Connect the positive pole of the backup battery with the red clip, and the negative pole with the black clip (Reverse connection will burn the car computer).*2)*. After the red light on the plug lights up, insert the OBD plug of the car. At this time, the sound of Didi kept coming out. The plug connection is normal.*3)*. Now you can safely change the battery, please handle carefully.NOTE for Step 3:# When changing the battery, be sure to lock the car and follow these tips.# DO NOT turn on the power equipment such as headlights.# DO NOT ground the positive pole of the battery. Otherwise, the fuse of the OBD socket of the car will be blown.
