Out of the box it "works" per say, after finding the software which seems to be behind a non-secure website, however the LED light only lights up part of document and leaves the rest of the document dark and causes a bad image. If you play with the contrast and brightness, then you find the camera casts a shadow over the page. Support tried to make suggestions but this is not working for me. Scan to PDF searchable does not even work with their own user guide provided much less any other document. I will return and will not recommend this product. I am going back to a flatbed scanner and wait for this technology to get better.

Unfortunately I can't recommend this camera. All this is is a USB camera with special optics that allows it to view an 8-1/2 by 11 inch page. The camera works well for this purpose. Being a USB camera it does absolutely nothing without some kind of software. If you have your own software then you may have better luck than I had. The VIISAN software is awful. I was hoping to use their OCR software to scan in some historical documents for my local museum. Unfortunately the OCR results are terrible and unusable. I tried watching one of their tutorial videos and it showed a book feature that doesn't even exist in the software I got from their site. It's also supposed to be able to smooth out a book page to make it appear flat. I'm unable to find that either. It can't handle a page with two columns of text. It converted it to a single column and interleaved the text together.

The VIISAN A8401 is hands down the best document scanner I’ve ever used. As someone who frequently deals with books and multi-page documents, this device has been a game-changer. Its compact, short-arm design fits perfectly on my desk, and the scanning speed of 1.5 seconds per page saves so much time.The software is robust—VIISAN OfficeCam makes it easy to convert my scans into Word or Excel files with pinpoint accuracy, thanks to the OCR engine.
