Defender-XL Features

Brightness Selection with the Defender-XL sight offers 12 settings (10 daylight settings and two NV settings). Adjust the dot brightness by pressing the appropriate “Up” or “Down” button.

Motion Activation is only available when the auto-shutoff feature is turned on. By allowing the unit to shut off automatically after 10 minutes, the dot will turn on automatically the next time you pick it up. Powering down the red dot manually will disable the motion activation.

Auto-Shutoff will automatically shut off the Defender-XL after 10 minutes. Powering down the red dot manually will disable the auto-shutoff feature. To engage or disengage the auto-shutoff press and hold the up and down buttons for three seconds.

Button Lockout mode prevents unintentional setting changes on your Defender-XL.

What can be said about the Vortex? It is flawless. I installed it on my Walther PPQ 22lr and love it. It is easy to install and easy to adjust. Another great Vortex product in my safe.

First there is nothing XL about it. I was expecting bigger but it's just about the same size as the other red dots. But instead of shooting this weekend it's going back because it won't power up. DOA ! So much for the "checked by XXXX" card in it.

If you need a big window optic on the DPP footprint, this is better than the Delta Point, more window space and easier to use buttons.

Vortex Defender XL #1 was purchased here, from Amazon. Out of the box, it was a great optic. No problems through the mounting process and I adapted quickly to the slightly higher platform base through a few reps in dry-fire. The first range sessions were good with the dot showing NO signs of glare or distortion through the very decent glass. I feel the 8 MOA dot size is excellent for practical shooting competition purposes. The problem started with the second range trip. The membrane over the "up" button cracked and peeled which exposed the internal button. It functions but is much more difficult to manipulate which is NOT something that the user should deal with on match day. Following the "one is none and two is one" mantra, I purchased a second Defender-XL from another well-known online retailer. That red dot is Dead On Arrival. Yes, the battery that was in the retail package was dead (measuring 2.5 volts) but after replacing it with a brand new Panasonic battery (measuring 3.1 volts) the dot showed one spark of life until the first slide manipulation in dry fire, and I haven't seen the dot since. Vortex has an excellent warranty and perhaps there's a reason for that. Maybe these are "new product" issues and we are the Beta testers. Either way, I had much hope for this product and we'll see what the warranty/customer service experience is like.

Optic fit right onto my Sig p320 dh3 9mm. Took it to the range and got it zeroed without any issues. Looking forward to using it in my upcoming match to see how I like it.Aug 29: got it zeroed and did a few drills with the optic on my sig. Love the optic!
