Product Description

Weller transforms hand soldering The art of hand soldering has been around for a very, very long time, thousands of years in fact. But it was only until 1941 that a transformer based instant heating soldering method was developed by an impatient American radio repairman who was tired of sitting around waiting for his soldering gun to heat up. Carl E. Weller had to wait until after WWII ended in 1945 to get his Weller Manufacturing Company going. In 1960, the Weller Manufacturing Co. in the US patented the “Magnastat” soldering iron which used a magnetic component to regulate the temperature at the iron’s tip. In an expansion overseas beginning in 1959, the Weller GmbH plant in Besigheim, Germany, along with new plants in other countries, was organized to manufacture temperature controlled irons and soldering guns for primarily industrial markets throughout Europe and the Near East. Keeping pace with the increasing complexity of our customers’ needs, Weller Germany became the market leader for developing and manufacturing hand soldering products worldwide. Our products were proudly emblazoned with “Made in Germany”, signifying innovation and reliability.

From the Manufacturer

The Weller Pyropen WSTA3 is a lightweight and completely portable soldering iron ideal for field service jobs. Does not require a cord, batteries, or a charge. This unit heats up in 30 seconds and it's temperature adjusts from 392° F to 932° F. The sturdy metal tank holds enough gas for three hours of operation - butane sold separately.

I like that it's a mostly complete kit with all your soldering needs. Portable and works in the wind and the rain. I also like that it's a brand name I've been interested in a long time. Made in either USA or Japan, both good whichever it is.It's slightly different from the ones at my workplace, maybe weaker(or more precise). I can't work with it at the absolute lowest gas setting like I do at work to minimize risk of damaged wire insulation. While it's heating up there's no glowy ceramic ring in the top part to tell me it's ready, in mine the entire thing glows orange so it's hard to tell. It's definitely good enough for me however, I like it.

Bought to replace a weller pyropen which has become faulty after many years of faithful use.Sad to say i had to return this unit, as unlike my old unit, there is no onboard ignition. No good for site work.Loved the nice case and whilst i did not try the unit, i feel sure it will work just as well as my old unit.

Seems like a nice product. I have not used it yet. However, be forewarned... The manufacturer's photo shows this product with a fuel canister. This does NOT come with fuel. You will need to order fuel separately. (It would be nice if the information was clear about that.)

There are no dislikes. Theres are some surprises , Quality (Japan) , fast tip heat, No more extention cords .The torch function is really a unexpected gift. I have been using it for a month everyday ,this is a hot flame it has a knob to regulate the primary air supply .That adjusts the feather on the flame (1x,2x,etc) I silver soldered some light gage (16 oz ) Copper sheet to see if it would ..yes .I am a retired Mechanical Contractor .Electronics , Art, light jewelry I am really happy .The better the Butane the best results it makes a difference and you are not wired to a electric chair. I still have the same Weller iron I bought in 1974 . I replaced the cords still works.Ok it is Dec6 2024 and I have a update. I have totally trashed and thrashed this soldering iron, abuse of the first order I am going to take it apart and clean it. I use it as a torch most of the time. Tough... I still love it. It's worth it. Get back latter.

I hesitated to buy this. It's expensive, and I wasn't sure how well it would work. My main concern was control. Can I solder smaller sensitive electronic components as well as larger field type repairs? The answer is yes, you can easily control the heat for smaller circuits. I pictured it as being capable of the standard heavy duty field repair, and it is, but I was surprised at how easily it transforms into a tool for small circuits. I tested the torch, it works fine, used it as a heat gun, again fine, but my main focus will be soldering electronic circuits. And it excels. I had to dig around a little to find a tapered needle solder tip for it. Amazon wants 4-6 weeks to ship the needle tip it sells. I found one online elsewhere that should arrive in a few days. The tapered needle tip should be more available than it is. Obviously, I highly recommend the Pyropen. I look forward to tomorrow's bench work.

I've owned a lot of soldering irons in my day and the Pyropen is the best everyday go-to soldering iron I've ever had. I've had mine for about 10 years now and it's never failed me.

Aside from the fact you need to have an ignition source (spark or flame) in your toolbox, this thing is made to last.I made sure the butane was empty before loading it into my checked luggage tool bag. Be sure to wrap a note to TSA or your countries travel security agency, detailing that you have evacuated all gas, or it may become a present to someone else!Unit had steady temperatures outdoors. I used it to complete a submersible cable splice. I think if the TSA dosen't confiscate it, it'll travel for years in my bag. The metal case is a plus, but not crush-proof.

Heats up fast, very good build quality. Using for automotive. We’re not supposed to use a 110v iron due to possibly inducing voltages in sensitive circuits. This iron puts out more heat then any butane powered soldering iron I’ve ever owned and is a great substitute for wired soldering irons. Also this iron has no self ignite and has to be lit with another lighter however in my opinion it’s just one less weak part to break

I originally bought a WSTA3 over fifteen years ago, and it worked flawlessly until this year, when it finally gave up the ghost. I had no hesitation whatsoever about replacing it with another WSTA3. It gets up to heat within 30 seconds, even working outside in windy conditions, and handles up to 10ga-wire soldering jobs just fine. The interchangeable tips are a plus, as is the micro-torch and hot air "gun" heads. I use it all the time for automotive work, where I can't get electrical power for my Weller portable soldering station, and use the heat gun for heat-shrinking connections in tight places as well. I have had no trouble getting three hours of work out of a full tank of butane, even in outdoor winter jobs. Refills are available at any place that sells refills for cigar lighters; the refill valve in the Pyropen tank is universal, and you don't need to pay the extra price for "Weller-Brand" butane - Ronson, et.al. works just fine. The self-lighting feature of the otherwise-identical Weller WPA2 iron is a nice luxury, however be aware you pay another $16 for the convenience, and you do not get the steel protective case or extra torch parts with the WPA2 that you get with the WSTA3. Dunno 'bout you, but in my opinion the protective case is a must-have for a working iron, and I can buy a lot of Bic lighters for sixteen bucks...
