Product works but, there is a noticeable intermittent lag when you are playing the guitar at low to medium volume levels. I bought it for a display setup that will be used every now and then, so I gave it 3 stars because it looks good on the display and plays right sometimes.

As a live musician I have had my share of tripping over wires in the past and am always on the lookout for wireless solutions. The Devilclaw comes in a eye-catching red color. The units work on multi-channel UHF, potentially avoiding interference from 2.4GHz devices. On turning them on, they paired easily, and seem to function as expected with little lag or hiss. Strangely, the Tx and the Rx units both feature volume controls; during a performance, the musician only has access to the Tx unit, the Rx being housed in a mixer far away. Both units have on/off buttons in addition and Type-C charging ports. A couple of annoyances: (1) it is hard to figure out which the Tx and Rx units are, unless one looks closely at the guitar stalk drawn on the units, where they are lettered very similarly; (2) the charging indicator is a tiny red dot that can easily be missed.

This DevilClaw wireless guitar system is the way. It’s UHF, which has slight advantages over 2.4GHz wireless systems, in that it has a bit better distance outdoors, and it’s a bit better at not getting blocked by more solid barriers, like walls. I didn’t notice any excessive noise from the wireless system itself – although when you crank the gain way up, you get a bit of hiss, like anything with high gain. So, what is the gain on these? Well, they have a built in volume button on both the RX and TX which goes from 1 to 5. I measured the voltage gain for each of these combinations (see pictures for details) with my oscilloscope and found that you can get anywhere from a 0.5 gain (half-volume cut) to a 9x boost. Setting each to “3” seems to be the sweet spot with about a 2x gain. Since you can change the volume on the guitar end more easily than the amp end, setting the receiver to “3” or “4” lets you change your guitar signal from 1x to around a 5x gain, which is a nice on-guitar boost. Basically, this turns your guitar’s volume knob into a super-volume knob with a much greater range, for when you want to dial above or below your amp’s breakup threshold.Even with very hard strumming, I couldn’t get these to clip on either the input or output (that's a good thing). The maximum voltage output I ever saw on the receiver output into the amp was 3.4Vpp at max gain. They do invert the phase of the signal by 180 degrees, and introduce just 6ms of delay (imperceptible to humans). The white color matches my white guitar nicely, and I got another great benefit too -- That particular guitar has a grounding problem that makes my amp hum – but with the wireless system there is no physical ground loop from the guitar to the amp, so the hum totally disappears. If you’re having noise issues with these, I’m guessing you have the volumes set too high on both, and you’re getting the standard, unavoidable hiss that comes with amplifying thermal noise in the circuit. Dial the volumes back, and there’s no noticeable noise. I tested these with two amps and two guitars, and was able to always dial in a noise-free setting. And, last but not least, the price. At the time of this review they were about $35, which is a great deal for how functional these are. These match or exceed the performance of my much more expensive name-brand wireless systems for much lower cost. They also come with a dual USB-C charging cable and a ¼ inch to 3.5mm adapter. Recommended, 5 stars.

I hate wires. The less the better. When playing guitar, there are always cables and wires going everywhere and no matter how diligent one might be, they always seem to end up in a tangled, gnarly mess. And with the plethora of pedals that can be added to the mix, it only seems worse. Until now. I’ve been pretty much a straight guitar player for most of my life but lately, I’ve discovered pedals and I’m having fun with them. First, I bought one, then another, and who knows what’s next? So, it occurs to me that wireless guitar pickups could also serve as a cable replacement between guitar and pedal, or pedal and amp, and so on. If I keep at it, I’ll surely end up with a complete setup with no wires at all. This was the basis of my selection of the DevilClaw C-505 Rotating Guitar Pickups. Not only do they work well between guitar and amp, they also function very well between guitar and my looper, as well as between my guitar and phase shifter.I like the design, with the indicator panel shaped like a guitar body and the TRANSMITTER and RECEIVER labels are clearly located so as to form the neck of the guitar shape. This makes it extremely easy to identify which is which. The plug folds up against the back of the device when not in use or to be out of the way if necessary. The box the pickups arrived in is attractively designed and functions well for storage when the pickups are not in use, since the interior is fitted with a dense foam insert with cutouts shaped to fit the pickups, charging cable and included 1/8” adapter. All controls are located on one side of each device and include an ON/OFF switch, a “+” button, a “-“ button and a type-C receptacle for USB charging. The + and – buttons are labeled as VOLUME in the instruction manual, but are actually used to increase or decrease the frequency at which the transmitter and receiver operate. There are a total of 16 frequencies available.Operation is simple and pairing is almost immediate. Out of the box, I plugged in the charging cables and got up to full strength in less than 2 hours. The indicators show three bars when fully charged. I played for about two hours and the indicators now show 2 bars, so there is plenty of power left for more practice sessions before needing to be recharged. If there is any latency in transmission, I didn’t notice it, although there might be an issue if several pair of these pickups were used at one time in a daisy chain. Some audiophiles with high tech gear could probably identify what there might be, but to my untrained ear, there was nothing noticeable or unsatisfactory, and I don’t have enough gear to test it in this kind of application. Overall, for my purpose, these work very well and I’m extremely happy with them.
