It does make a great thunder sound. Volume can be controlled by the tension put on the spring. Well made.

I am a musician, and have been getting my non-musical (but wishes he was) husband drums for every gift giving holiday so he can join in the fun. This drum is fun, and this drum is LOUD. It definitely sounds like a thunderstorm, especially paired with a rain stick. One thing to be aware of is that it has scared some little kids a bit because of the volume.Also, I wouldn't let little kids play with it as they will want to grab it by the metal coil and run around the house screaming like a loon, whipping it around their heads almost breaking every piece of glass your Grandma brought back from Greece until you threaten to take their blankie away. Hypothetically speaking, of course.
