About this item

  • ZWO ASI183MC-Pro cooled color astronomy camera for capturing high-resolution color images of deep-sky objects such as nebulae, supernova remnants, galaxies, and the Moon and Sun through a telescope on a motorized equatorial mount (solar imaging requires a solar filter, not included)
  • Advanced CMOS sensor with 5496x3672 (20.1 megapixel) resolution and 2.4-micron pixel size to capture fine detail in astronomical objects; High quantum efficiency to help reduce exposure time; Integrated TEC cooling reduces sensor temperature to 40C-45C below ambient to enable low-noise imaging of fainter deep-sky objects
  • Fast USB3.0 transfer at up to 19 frames per second at maximum resolution; 256MB DDR3 buffer for quick and stable data transfer and reduced amp glow; includes separate USB2.0 hub for powering accessories such as autoguiding camera and electronic focuser (not included)
  • Compact, lightweight, and attractive red anodized CNC aluminum body stands up to heavy field use; Connects to 1.25” and 2” telescope focusers with included T-threaded 1.25” nosepiece and 2” adapter
  • Camera electronics draw power from your computer’s USB3.0 interface, however a separate 12V@3A power supply (not included) is required to power the TEC cooler; All software and drivers are available from the manufacturer’s website; compatible with Mac OS X and Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) XP and later

The ZWO ASI183MC-Pro is a versatile and highly sensitive color astronomy camera for deep-sky imaging, lunar and solar imaging, and electronically-assisted astronomy (EAA) through a telescope. The camera incorporates a large state-of-the-art 13.2mmx8.8mm CMOS sensor with 20.1 megapixels and high quantum efficiency to help you extract maximum detail in your astrophotos while keeping noise and exposure time as low as possible. The camera also features TEC-cooling to reduce sensor noise for superb performance when imaging faint astronomical objects. The camera includes an internal 256MB DDR3 memory buffer for quick and stable data transfer. The USB3.0 port offers a fast capture rate of 19 frames-per-second at the full resolution of 5496x3672, and much faster rates at lower resolutions. These data rates are perfect for solar and lunar imaging, and they allow for real-time focusing during EAA and imaging applications. This camera is also great for ‘lucky imaging’ of planets, double stars, and other compact objects, especially for telescopes with longer focal lengths. NOTE: This camera is best used with a refractor or reflector telescope mounted on a solid equatorial mount that can accurately track the motion of the sky. It is not intended for taking images through the eyepiece of a telescope. This camera produces color images without the need for additional color filters, but you may require additional accessories such as an autoguider or focal reducer to get the best results. All software and drivers for this camera are available from the manufacturer’s website.

First thing to know this is an older ZWO camera model. So there are probably better options available now. Like the 533 (which comes at a cost of larger pixels if using on a wide field scope), or ZWO's newer 585 camera, which has slightly lower resolution, and slightly larger pixels, but lower cost.Know that you will most likely have to calibrate out amp glow using this camera. This isn't too big of a deal, but can really be a pain sometimes. I've found shooting darks every night it calibrates out very well, if you use a dark library you've built they don't calibrate out as well. All and all I've taken great images with this camera! It pairs very well with the redcat 51, but I've even used this to take images though an 8" SCT. I've used this camera in the cooled, and uncooled versions. Color and mono all of which are very capable camera's.The Photo's:M101: Using the 183 through an 8" SCTNGC 6992: Through a RedCat 51NGC 2244: A single 4 minute unedited sub exposure showing the amp glow on the right hand side.

I've owned this camera for almost a year now and have been using it as much as I can as I learn to capture deep space objects. The resolution is great for a scope or lens that can give crisp views. I have been buying equipment a piece at a time as I can afford to. This is by far my favorite purchase. Do yourself a favor and buy a good scope and especially a good mount to take advantage of the specs this camera offers.I'm sold on ZWO at this point and am moving more and more into buying their offerings. If you're stepping up from an old DSLR or a lesser camera this is a great one to test the waters for a little less money before moving onto the bigger cameras.I have zero regrets after a solid year of growing into this little gem.BTW buy the cooled camera! It is more suitable for longer exposures.

Awesome camera for the price. I checked out multiple cameras from ZWO and the 183MC Pro is a great one for the price. Shipping was super fast and came perfectly and save-wrapped.

Do not get me wrong, this is a fantastic camera and a large upgrade from celestrons offering. However, this is more of a scope to use for guiding and taking some photos. If you are wanting to take photos of deep space objects, you need to control temp. This camera will not do this for you, and you will not be happy with the noise it produces on deep space photography.Do yourself a favor, just get the one with the cooler. Its a bit more, but in the long run you will thank me. Now, I need to return this one as my wife wont let me have both.

Nice camera. Haven't really got to use it though, too much fog, clouds, rain, etc.

Camera is great. I just tested it in the house as I have not yet had the time or the weather good enough to really test it.
