I added a 3-foot piece of gutter to the lower elbow of the downspout in order to drain the rain away from the house. This hinge is used to lift and lower that extension out of your way whenever you need to cut your grass. This comes with a small clip that you can use to hold the extension up, however, I purchased the magnet piece separately. That magnet holds the gutter up, keeping the extension from falling back down. Easy to install.

Is exactly what I was looking for so that I can have a longer gutter to get the water away from my house but when I have to mow the lawn I needed to get out of the way and this thing worked perfectly. I would have thought maybe water would have dripped on the sides at the opening because there is a hole that you can visibly see where the hinges and the gutter attached. But this isn't the case even when it is pouring like crazy all the water seems to go down the pipe and not really out the sides. A few droplets here and there but nothing bad.

I usually research things pretty well but this seemed so plain and obvious, it was an elbow with a hinge "gizmo" you connect to the down spot and the extended gutter away from the house.Uh ... NO...it is just the "hardware" to MAKE the hinging elbow. SO...add hours going to home store for new elbows and longer run of spout.Had to get out the miter saw, chop length, and then chop 45 degree angle (use the right blade in your saw). Tried hack saw first...forget that! Even after using miter saw you still need tin snips (aka aviation snips) to get into the pesky corners for a full contact fit. (DO NOT expect to just blitz thru with snips and you better have left/right AND straight!)Decided to do pre-assembly indoors in comfort rather than risk dropping screws in the dirt/grass. It was partially helpful.Rangled it into position on the exterior downspout-- though I don't think it wiggled all they way to original height and decided that the slope wasn't good enough. --So back into the tools and got the multi-tool and took off about 1" from down spout. THEN I couldn't get the elbow back on. After an hour managed to just get it wiggled enough to do...for awhile...without an anchor screw until...whenever. I hope it holds until I can tackle a better mount.Would I have saved time doing it in situ? Maybe, but not much. Maybe in new construction under ideal circumstances you can accomplish each one in half and hour, including cutting your new spout. And I have NEVER had anything in ideal circumstances... Plan for longer time per spout. The rest of this project that will now be on hold for days (if not until spring) until it is safe to go to the home store. (Unless we get a warmish day and I don't have anything to do for another 4 hours.)

Best solution I've found for gutter extensions. These two-piece hinges were easy to install. Do go watch the video on their website, as the written instructions are not very clear. The video says all! The first downspout took me 30 minutes as I was very very cautious about the install and fit. After that, the next five downspouts were about five minutes each.Aluminum downspout is recommended for extensions, but I used vinyl downspout and it worked fine, the included zip screws went through it easily. I cut the vinyl extensions with a hacksaw and miter box for 45 degree angle needed to attach. NOTE: Be sure you are cutting the 45 across the correct side! I wasn't paying that much attention and almost cut one left to right instead of top to bottom...Another reviewer mentioned putting a bolt through the hinge holes once assembled and I agree, so I did that. The hinges will work without the bolt but as they are a bit flimsy, the long bolt through the holes really helps to stabilize the hinge joint.I can't use the included butterfly hangers to hold the extensions in the upright position as my extensions are 6 feet, they go up to the top where the downspout bends toward the gutter. So instead I used two different methods.Four of six downspouts are flush against the house. For these I used a long piece of 20 gauge 316 stainless steel wire, threaded between the downspout and house. I bent the ends into a U shape, and just hook the ends together around the extension to hold it up. It doesn't have to be tight, just snug enough to not unhook in a heavy wind. The other two downspouts are not flush against the house but stand off a few inches. For these I used a long piece of "one-wrap" velcro strapping, I just wrap the extension to the downspout. (One-wrap is not sticky; it has hooks on one side and loops on the other so you can wrap it around itself no matter what length. Great for wrapping around cables and wires too.)I would give the Zip Hinge 5 stars if it was sturdier. And if it had a good method for securing extensions up that are too long to use the included butterfly retainer.
