I have always staid away from this style of float, being fearful that they'll bump into it when they climb into the water (they are naughty like that), but i got tired of them killing the fillers that sit in the water with the algae and plants that only grows in their tank. I think it's because they are the only ones that climb into the tank, but i would end up with algea and plats getting into the floats which would get them stuck open causing a flood. It happens all the time, and i'd have to take it apart to fix it, and then scoop all the stuff out so it'll last a while again. Now, only the ball is in the water, and that can't get damaged by plants, so i won't have that problem anymore. I had already bent a few pieces of re-bar and attached them to t-posts so that the aoudad wont' bump into the filler, so i just adjusted them to protect the float and i think i'll be good. no more junk getting into my valve because the valve isn't in the water anymore! It also seems to fill much faster than the old small float styles, which is nice since they often displace alot of water.
