This gourd African shaker is traditionally known as the axatse (ah-HOT-say) in Ghana, and is also known more generically as a shekere (SHEH-kuh-ray). Each dry, hollow calabash is hand selected for thickness and proportion, then dressed with a lattice work of Job's Tear Seeds. This shekere african instrument can be played like a maraca, by gently tugging on the blue rope ends, by swirling or twisting the seed net, or with more intricate double handed techniques. The axatse differs from the Afro-Cuban shekere in that it is smaller and does not produce a bass note when the top of the gourd is struck.

All African Heartwood Project axatse percussion instrument are covered by our warranty, and feature:
Strong gourd body and handle, hollow and dried
Whole natural seed beads intricately labrynthed in web of bright blue string
Rubber strip at the neck keeps seeds and string from coming loose or sliding up the gourd
Long handle on gourd for easy handling and full control

Your purchase of this instrument helps support the efforts of non-profit Africa Heartwood Project. As you connect with traditional world music culture, enjoy the satisfaction of knowing your purchase contributes to a meaningful cause, providing Village Water Projects and Orphan Support to West African communities in need.

A nice instrument but make sure you don't play with the strings to much because it might come out

Well made. Has stood up to K-8 student use. Much smaller than your typical shakere but for the price it's a good size and quality.

It's a nice instrument but the strings tend to get loose when you shake hard

As soon as I received this shakere, I found it irresistible to shake and move around the house. I purchased this to teach young children about rhythm instruments and I am sure they will find this instrument fascinating. Additionally children will learn about various cultures. We plan to make a shakere ourselves, using a milk jug.

I lived in Ghana for a couple years and bought this before I went to my daughter's class to talk about my time there. It's just like the ones we played in Ghana, strong, beautiful, and authentic. Exactly what I wanted :)
