Unlike most of the reviews for this i didnt receive this for free.. so my review is unbiased.. i also made a video on YouTube under my Amazon name.. Aiwa back in the early days of the 80's and 90's made some really high quality electronics.. eventually it was bought out by Sony in the early 2000's.. in 2008 Sony sold off the name.. years later Aiwa made a sweet comeback with the Exos 9 Bluetooth boombox.. which was a highly rated powerful portable speaker system.. now they released this modern take on a old school boombox.. and i say they did a great job! although this version of the Aiwa has been around under different names in other countries it finally released here.. even though the price is a bit steep.. it IS a quality modern take on the retro boomboxes of the 80's with some modern touches to bring it to todays standards.. it's not perfect.. it should use a rechargeable battery instead of outdated "D" cell batteries.. but it does have solid controls and is well built.. and it does sound great.. with punchy Bass and loudness.. so if you want a modern boombox with old school feel and ability to play cassettes and CD's you cant do much better than this beast.. a solid 8 out of 10..

Well, hmmm. I had to significantly revise this review after listening to this boombox for a while. My first impression was not good. I found the sound at low volume to be very clear. But as I increased the volume, the bass got “boomy” and distorted very quickly, even without the bass boost turned on. At mid to high volumes, the bass distorted and the sound degraded pretty quickly. That increased if the bass boost was used. Today, I tried the device on CD, tape (yes, I still have some cassette tapes), and Spotify over Bluetooth and it sounded fine. Even with the bass boost on, it didn’t seem to distort as badly as before and at lower volumes, it sounds really clear. It’s almost like I had to break in the speakers so they wouldn’t distort. Whatever the reason, I am upgrading my review because today I’m pretty happy with the sound and no one can dispute the versatility of this device. If you listen to music and other sources (podcasts, talk radio, etc) at low to mid volume, this will provide you with very listenable sound from a wide array of sources. Pairing to my iPhone was simple and I was easily able to listen to Spotify through the boombox which definitely gives higher quality sound than my iPhone. I also listened to FM stereo radio, cassette tapes, and some CDs with the same ease and today they sounded good with or without the bass boost and even at pretty high volumes. If you are interested in recording, note that you can record from any source to a tape, flashdrive, or microSD card but not to CD. You can use microphone inputs to sing over most sources but you can’t record your voice over the source. There are two ¼ inch microphone inputs and for kicks and giggles it also has an “echo” feature for the mics. One thing to keep in mind is that this boombox is HEAVY. I weighed it with a luggage scale and found it weighed 18 pounds! I think many people would find it a chore to drag this around as a portable radio. You can power it with 8 “D” batteries but I only tried it in corded mode plugged in to a wall outlet. Another thing to note is that there is no remote control. In the final analysis, this is pretty good. It’s heavy and lacks a remote but the sound is OK. It is very versatile so if that’s the most important feature for you, you should give this a close look. It also comes with a very good owner’s manual written in understandable English. I don’t know why I had problems the first time I listened to the boombox, but my impression has improved. I’m looking forward to using this more in the future.

I was impressed with how quickly this aiwa Retro Boombox arrived after I ordered it. I also appreciated how carefully the unit was packed. It came in a very large outer box and was carefully cushioned to ensure the unit arrived without shipping damage.Out of the box, it was perfect—not a scratch or nick anywhere. It's a lovely silver color that works great with my decor and looks classy.I was surprised at how big the Boom Box was. I have a hard time with the scale of some items I order because, in my mind, they seem smaller than they are in reality. This is not against the manufacturer. They clearly provide all the dimensions. The unit is 26.38" wide, 10.67" high, and 6.73" deep. But I thought it was a lot smaller. And lighter. The unit is heavy, which is appropriate for all the features it provides and the number of speakers. This is not a negative against aiwa. They do a great job of describing the Boom Box on Amazon. They also provide an instruction booklet, which is rare these days. Right? It is very detailed, although a lot of the features are easy to figure out without the booklet. It's evident that aiwa put considerable thought into the design and manufacture of this unit. The unit includes a CD Player with Cassette Recording, Bluetooth 5.0, FM/AM Radio, USB/SD/AUX Inputs, VU Meters, LCD Display, and Dual 40W Speakers. My husband is a professional musician. He has a room full of recording equipment, and he is a stickler for sound quality. He popped in a music CD as well as a tape cassette to listen and weigh in with his opinion. I love listening to music and played a few instruments in my time, but I am not a good judge of sound. He said the sound quality is "decent" and the "bass is OK," but he tends to like a lot of deep bass. He told me that for the money, the Boom Box was a good buy.I was happy to hear his feedback because he is very, very picky. He even said if I didn't want the Boom Box (I do), he would love to have it as a back-up for playing his cassette tapes. You can also attach a microphone if you desire, although I didn't have a need for this feature. The only complaint he had, and I agree, is that the CD player loads vertically instead of horizontally. I also prefer horizontal loading, but I understand why aiwa used the vertical design. It isn't a negative; it's just a difference in design features.I am thrilled with the sound. The bass is fine, especially when I am using quality headphones. I also like the cassette player. I have stacks of old tapes and needed a Boom Box that could play them. The headphone jack uses a traditional Sleeve Ring Tip connector. If you want to use any other type of wired headphones, you will need an adapter. Luckily, I had both kinds of headphones.I love everything about this unit, except the inconvenience of the CD vertical load. I also find it too heavy to carry around. It's better suited as a stationary unit. It does have a sturdy handle for carrying around, but the unit is hefty. For playing old cassette tapes and CDs it's excellent. I found tuning the radio stations to be more spotty, but the unit does have an antenna to help with that.I am giving this 5+ stars. If you have a clear understanding of what you want to accomplish by purchasing this Boom Box, you will be happy. Not everyone will love it, but for the price, the quality of workmanship, and the features offered, it is excellent and worthwhile.
