But, unfortunately, I could not figure out how to make the software work. They did provide a mini cd-rom for the software, but my computers do not have a cd drive. As a result, they require you to download software and then you have to add something else to that. Then you have to learn how to use the software. This was too complicated for me. I was hoping for something I could just plug in, add the software, and then copy all the cassette tapes that I have in storage. These cassette tapes are sentimental because they have recordings from my family members who are passed on, so I was worried at first about using this tape player. The tape player does work on its own. The concept is a great idea. The execution is not so great because there should be some kind of plug and play software instead of using Audacity, and on top of that needing to download another file called Lame from another website. Perhaps if the instructions were a bit clearer and Audacity was a bit more user friendly for someone with no knowledge of those types of programs.....this might have been a home run. Even after spending a couple of hours trying to learn how to use Audacity, I still could not get it to pick up the audio from the tape player. It was just too much hassle to figure out that part. That's why I rated it three stars. If you can't use the software, then this is just a tape player.

When your hand is near the edge of the tape player case you hear an increased electrical hum through headphones. This is a resl bad problem when you are trying to make digital copies of your cassette tapes. Is there a fix?? I HOPE SO!

I have some old cassettes of band rehearsal. Yeah, old, like we were playing music in the late 80's early 90's. I don't think I've listened to them in 30 years.I'm starting to get the "songs" (I use quotations because it is questionable if they can be called songs...) into the computer and listen to them. After listening to a few of the home-recorded "songs" I realized something: we sucked.I mean A for effort and all, but oh boy... yikes.-I didn't take any stars off because this player to made it easy to listen to my old "music"... and shatter my "man we were so good back in the day..." memory. So yes, long story short, this player works well to record songs form cassettes.

This Janryzone cassette player does one thing really well: it lets you convert cassette tapes into MP3s (or some other formats, too). This player and its accompanying software is a relatively easy solution to getting greater use out of the cassettes' content.I have a number of professional tapes from the 1980s that aren't available anywhere else these days, to my knowledge, but using a cassette player to listen to them isn't likely to happen. At least, given that it hasn't happened in the past 30 years or so means a new approach was in order. This Janryzone pretty much takes care of that concern. The cassette player is pretty well made. It's transparent, so you can see the mechanical workings on one side and the cassette tape itself on the other. I see this as mostly a novelty, but it's okay. The main trouble with the design is that the black control buttons are on a white field, with the function labels also white: meaning, they're almost impossible to read. Also, the function buttons are kind of upside down, only readable with the mechanism side of the player, not the tape, visible, so you pretty much have to read upside down. Not good planning design, in my view.Forget about using the enclosed wired headphones. They're not the worst ones in the world, but using a decent pair you probably already have will improve your life quality an awful lot. Also, one thing I've never liked in inexpensive cassette players is the lack of autostop when reversing or fast forwarding. I still don't like it, but that's the case here: you have to stop it yourself after rewinding. The player is also autoreverse, which is good if you're listening to music, but a hassle when you're copying tapes if you only want to do one side. There's a switch that supposedly offers one-side play versus autoreverse, but in my experience, it autoreverses whether you want it to or not regardless of the setting. The enclosed software works pretty well on a Windows computer, but it has that circa-Windows 98 look to it. The instructions aren't very helpful, either, but I was able to figure out how to copy and label the recorded cassette content pretty much by trial and error. The resulting digital sound is good, though, and it gives me more listening options now: anywhere you can play an MP3.So, I'm largely happy with the ability to convert cassettes into MP3 recordings, but I'd consider getting a different cassette player if i used it for actually listening to cassettes. I can't see who would, given how ubiquitous cellphones and MP3 players are nowadays (plus, having bluetooth available, of course), but I guess you could.I'm giving this player four stars because it does a good job, overall, in converting cassette tapes to MP3s. I'd like to see some changes (autostop, actual one-way play--no autoreverse, better instructions, and maybe better headphones), but for the way I'm using it, it solves the problem of having old cassettes sitting around. Nice to have for that reason, but you might want to consider the feature set if you intend--for some unclear reason--to listen to cassettes like in the old Walkman days.
