As a Marine, this is a must have when the fit hits the shan.. It's already programed so you can listen to NOAA reports, police and fire dispatch.

I grabbed this set of K5Plus radios to compare with a similar radio I already had on hand.* I received a pair of single-unit boxes in a green plastic kit bag without model-specific data labeling.* Both boxes had been hand-packed/repacked to fit the basic kit and also include the kit-SKU accessories* Parts were mixed, so check both boxes for accessories, as I think it's the only way it would all fit* The sticker at the battery port lists Model: UV-K5Plus and FCCID: 2AJGM-5RM* The menu lists Firmware V0.17 and Hardware V01As with the other radios in the newer/larger Baofeng radio line, these are constructed solidly and feel great in the hand. All controls are quality, and the larger 2500mAh batteries are a great fit for the higher-claimed 10W power range of these units.I brought one to full charge using the handy USB-C port and connected it to a Surecom Power Meter with a 50W dummy load. I measured over 8W across several frequencies in the 2m and 70cm bands, so that's good, but I'd hoped these would perform similarly to the "5RM with no UV" models. From my testing on these early units, they are about a Watt short of the 5RMs with the same FW and HW versions and release time. 10% down in wattage is nothing though, when you consider that 10x up is what you need to notice a real difference.I also noted during the power test that these radios are unlocked. They can and will transmit in the FRS/GMRS frequencies right out of the box and will output above 8W there, too. This is not the intended use case of these radios, so use discretion. As for the accessories, everything works as intended and are all of decent construction quality. The PAIR of programming cable is awesome! The most notable item in this kit is the "tactical" antennas. These do work well and they are very convenient. However, please note that when the antenna is folded, one should not transmit in that state, as the SWR is very high and can damage the radio. Unfolding it, the SWR is very near 1:1.In all, this is a great kit, and I like the "alternate" design and trim colors. It's also a great kit to split since it includes two programming cables.

Baofeng users will be accustomed to the feel and finish of this radio. It feels solid in the hand and is finished well enough for a product in its price range. It comes with all of expected accessories including an after market Abree tape antenna which is a star performer. The large color display is bright and clearly visible. Audio is adequate but not super. The radio tested well on the bench. This is truly a tri band radio not just a dual band radio that puts out some sort of signal on 220. Into a fifty ohm non reactive load the transmitter produced 8.1 watts on two meters, 5.8 watts on 220 and 8.9 watts on 70 cm. Power into the supplied Abree tape antenna was very respectable at 8.6 watts at 1.26 swr on two meters, 6.5 watts at a 3.0 swr on 220 and 8.8 watts at a 1.97 swr on 70 cm. Very respectable figures. The first transmitter harmonic on two meters was precisly -30 db the FCC standard. There were no measurable transmitter harmonics on the other bands. Reciever sensitivity tested at a respectable -125 to -130 db on all bands.I will not do a blow by blow on the rather nice feature set. The radio performs as described in the company's literature with one exception. While the radio shows the ability to program into memory banks on CHIRP and will do do so we could find no way to access those memory banks from the radio keyboard. I have the BTECH version of this radio which came with the US modified firmwar which gives a better organized display and the ability to directly access the memory banks from the radio keyboard. That function makes it possible to organize the thousand memory capacity of the radio into usuable divisions. The lack of direct access to the memory banks is my only criticism of this radio. It is a solid performer at a good price.

I think these are a pretty good upgrade over the UV5Rs I've been using for quite some time. I connected them to my jpole in my attic and was seeing 9.05W on transmission on 144Mhz with a 1.2SWR (my jpole isn't perfect). When connected to one of their cheap whip antennas I was getting a pretty terrible 4+SWR, but 9.75W.The airband reception is poor, SQL must be set to 1 or 0 to get anything at all - even when I'm standing within the airport fence and could throw the radio onto the runway. I've tried their antennas, my car mounted antenna, and my jpole antenna in my attic. None work well at all, and one radio is worse than the other, so consistency is poor too. The jpole I have is connected to a TYT-9800 normally and easily receives strong signals from the Class C airport 5 miles from my house, but when connected to this radio it barely works. Definitely don't buy this if you think you'll use the Airband reception.
