Maskedfish CF-Express Type-B to M.2 NVMe 2230 M-Key Adapter CFE for Xbox Series X&S CH SN530 SSD PCIe4.0 Expansion Memory Card, Silver SUS304 Housing, DIYi really like the idea of making my own cfexpress type b with 2230 ssd's. its so much better than the spend needed for premade ones. the difference is striking. sadly, this case does not work with my ssd. i have built a few of the screw case type cartridges which work fine. the screw type also allow you to put thermal paste on the ssd. the first thing i noticed when i opened the package, 1). no instructions. ok, i think i can figure it out. 2). no way to add thermal paste. maybe not a problem, but sort of a problem in my opinion. so i went back to the amazon listing and saw a quick video, the orientation is on the case, so the nvme 2230 ssd has a wide and a narrow leg. just have to orient these according to the picture on the case. ok. did that. however, the ssd does not seat. it wont slide into the slot all the way. i used a sabrent rocket 2230 nvme. the pin configuration is correct, you can just make it out looking inside the case. but what appears to be the problem, is hmm. how to articulate this... lay the ssd on the table, pins facing away from you. little leg on the right. on my ssd, there is a branded sticker on the part that you are looking down at, well. that sticker is on some circuitry doodads. the thickness of the doo dads below the sticker are maybe a millimeter thick, then there is the board where the pins/ legs are. now inside the case there is not an allowance for this 1 millimeter thickness. the pins/ legs are not in the right plane as the slots they are meant to slot into. believe me i tried ...--after some considerable fussing. this went from 2 stars to 4. the economics just makes it so.i got it in. you kind of have to push the drive in at an angle for it to seat. this was not a fun experience, but it went in. being a new drive, i then had to initialize/ format. then i went straight to crystal diskmark to see what came up. 1870 read/ 1698write. this is on a lexar pro reader, the fastest i have in shop. on the fastest port i have (usb 3.2 gen 2x2 20G type c.) this appears -to be- after a quick search comparable to a lexar diamond 1900/1700. that is a whopping 530 bucks for a 512gb. versus a sabrent rocket 2230 clocking in at 50-60 bucks. plus masked fish case at 20. that is a substantial savings. huge. now there are some caveats. i am concerned about heat. it is not machined aluminum, its a sheet metal enclosure. there is no way to add thermal paste, but the fit is such that the ssd is in direct contact with the case. the other thing is removal from what ever thing you put it into is a little finicky, because there is no fingernail depression, you are mostly gripping onto the ssd. but at well over 450 dollar savings it is worth the hastle. the naysayers will worry about whether it is safe to do this. will you lose data. can it get corrupted. etc. i cannot answer that, i have not needed to do those sorts of extensive tests. but i suspect the expensive branded all-inclusive cfexpresses, are basically the same sort of tech but with a 450 dollar sticker attached.for diy cfexpress-b, i think i prefer the case you can screw doww, but they are twice the cost of this case. so, as long as you are willing to take a chance that things may not go to plan, i am able to recommend this as a superior economical alternative to overpriced branded cfexpress-b's.
