I'm no expert and had to look up a lot to make sense of what I'm seeing. This is a water tester that tests for TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in water. I believe this tester does that and is accurate. My tap water is 198 on this meter, and my distilled water is very low, in most cases 0. I had some distilled that had been sitting around for a while, and it was around 10. My artisional spring water was higher than I thought it would be. I got a range between 50 and 100 in the samples I tested. I asked my water guy, and he says that's normal for drinking water as they add minerals into it to make it healthy and taste good. They claim distilled water will actually leach minerals out of you, and they do not recommend it for regular drinking. This tester does what it says, but I can't quantify the quality of water based solely on the TDS readings. Regardless, this tool is a step in the right direction and can lead you to a better understanding of what's really going on with your water. I took one star off because there isn't a lot for directions; they do not include any kind of scale about what an acceptable TDS level is or isn't.

I ordered this water tester to monitor the filtered water from our refrigerator and the tap water that we use in our room humidifiers instead of the recommended distilled water. There is a nice chart of water hardness levels in the Amazon listing; I wish they have provided that with the tester itself but they don’t. Our tap water read around 150 ppm, about what I expected for the hard water in our area. Filtered water from our refrigerator read 106 even though the filter is due to be replaced soon and that was comforting to know. Distilled water that we use for a CPAP machine read 0 and that was good news. These measurements helped me understand our water quality and make me trust the meter.
