Product Description

RS232 to RS485 Converter with 4 Position Terminal Block for Long Haul Data Communication

Port powered RS232 to RS485 converter

Mini Size RS232 to RS485 Serial Adapter with Terminal Block

RS-232 to RS-485 converters are mostly used in industrial and commercial environments. The reason is that the RS485 converter can be used for multi-drop networks, meaning that you for example can connect multiple RS485 devices to one computer. Up to 32 devices can be connected in one network to communicate on a single pair of wires (plus a ground wire). This type of communication is called half-duplex communication. Most quality RS485 converters can communicate in this manner of up to 4000 feet (1200 meters).

RS232 to RS485 serial converter is also fairly resistant to noise which is one more reason why it is favored in industrial environments.

Industrial RS-232 to RS-485 Converter

RS485 link: 4 position terminal block pinout, 1 for T/R+, 2 for T/R-, 3 for GND, 4 for VCC

RS485 link - terminal block pinout

Surge Protection: RS485 Interface, Each wire 600W

DB9 RS232 port pinout

RS232 link - DB9 pinout

Port-Power serial adapter: No external power supply required, it is port-powered from RS232 data lines and low consumption electricity.

Used a couple of these to adapt to existing rs-485 networks to talk to a PC even when wired properly we would get garbled information. Networks were grounded properly and used shielded cables. Not sure if it was due to something in our setup but we are still working on the problem.

I bought this gadget to drive a PTZ security camera that needs RS485 control from a standard RS232 port.It was completely plug and play, with no external power supply needed. Hopefully it will also provide some isolation from the cable to the 232 port as I have had spikes take those down a couple of times now.Update*Sure enough we had another near strike and it killed a 232 port on my alarm system, but the port with the adapter was fine even though the camera it's attached to went sort of berserk. I lost control of the camera but the adapter took the hit, not the port. New adapter installed and up and running. Huge win.

Needed a way to hook a PC to an RS485 power meter, so plugged this in and connected two wires to the screw terminals, positive and negative. Amazingly worked perfect very first try. This item simply works.
