Needed a spot weld on my sewing machine circuit board. For a few dollars more I got this kit with a bunch of handy gadgets. Voltage meter, wire stripper, etc are always nice to have.

I got this for the soldering iron as mine was dying. I left it plugged in for several minutes with no heat generation. The iron was easy enough to pull apart and I quickly found bad solder on the heating element. After fixing that, the iron worked great. It heats super quick and has several tips for various projects. The suction unit for de-soldering is pretty gimmicky.I've only used the multi-meter once, but it did what I needed.Again, not a super high end kit, but great for starters, or to have as a backup.

And priced right. The volt meter is a nice addition.

This kit is so affordable that there's no reason not to get it as a starting place for beginners wanting to experiment with microelectronics, wiring and soldering. It would also be a good gift for a young kid who you think might be interested in STEM. It's got all the basic tools needed to get started (and quite a few I didn't pick up for quite a long time). If you wind up liking it and soldering or pulling out the multimeter more than once every few months, plan on investing in some upgrades. As but one example, there's no comparison between the soldering iron in this kit and a digitally controlled one with a fast heat-up time. Yes, this one *works* but the faster you upgrade after mastering the basics the happier you'll be.Once you've "outgrown" this kit, it'll be a great addition to your truck or van's tool kit. You don't want to keep your Fluke or Hakko in the trunk, and this kit is more than good enough to diagnose a wide range of automotive electrical problems. For what it is, and the price point, it's fantastic. But it's for beginners, or your car's tool kit. Not for daily use.

This is not a set that I would use professionally or for more intricate repairs. It is $20, and you are getting $20 of value out of it.This has the basics of a soldering set, and a basic multimeter. If you want to do small repairs around the house, want to learn a couple new skills, or want a set for a responsible teenager who wants to get into a tech career, this is a neat set. I wouldn't expect this set to outlive anyone, and to be worn down with time. But if you're wanting to get into electronics repairs, this covers your bases quite cheaply.

I'm really struggling on how to rate this. This is definitely a case of "You get what you pay for"My struggle is this is a cheap kit... none of the components are great. They get the most basic of jobs done and that's it. On the other hand, it was $20... and I can't really fault a kit like this for being cheap and only being $20. It's a good buy for $20 if you need something to keep in the back of the closet at the vacation house where you don't have your real tools. That's what i use it for ... I keep it in the drawer where I don't have my regular tools handy.Don't expect accuracy or control with this... it's more like using a 3lb sledge to drive a picture nail in. It can be done, you just have to be delicate with it and be aware of the limitations. For basic work or for beginners/kids learning how to solder and/or use a multimeter... this is great. If you need to do any sort of precision work you should probably look elsewhere (and spend a bit more than $20).
