I have long used the earlier version of this Fiskars 8.5x8.5 ruler. It helps me to make very precise fabric cuts. After long use, the black lines on the ruler begin to wear off. For $10, replacing this ruler every 5 years is fine. However. The new version of this Fiskars 8.5x8.5 ruler has white protective lines on the bottom surface that obscure the fabric laying under the black inch mark lines, meaning that cuts are less precise with the newer version of this ruler. I imagine that the white lines are there to prevent the black lines from wearing off? I would rather make precise cuts and buy a new ruler every 5 years when the black lines wear thin. Alas, the listing for this item in Amazon currently has two images, one image showing the early version of this ruler and the other image showing the current version of this ruler. I did not pay close enough attention. I need the earlier version of this product, not the current version. I am sure that the new version of this ruler is fine for many users who do not require as precise measurements as do I. (I continue my quest for an 8.5x8.5 acrylic ruler that has ONLY the thin black lines and NO white highlights. I need to see the fabric exactly under each of the black inch mark lines; for example, to make exact 6"x6" squares.)

I used to cut quilt blocks out with my cutter on the mat using a ruler -- NOT ANY MORE! This square 8 1/2" ruler sped things up so much when I was making a cathedral window style crazy quilt (which was labor intensive) and I will find or adapt patterns to use the 8" finished blocks and use this whenever possible.I love this square ruler, it's my new favorite gadget for sure.

Exactly the size I needed to design my own appliqué shapes and to square up quilt blocks. There’s also a bit of grippy-ness on the back which I didn’t expect. Easy to line up, easy to read number, just the right thickness to make it sturdy.Also, quick delivery. I didn’t wait too long, just a week. But I wasn’t in a big hurry, either.

Just what I needed to square up my 8.5in squares. I was a bit confused by having a 1/2" on one side of the ruler, & the acrylic is a darker colour making it a bit difficult to see through. However, there are lines going through the centre of the ruler, which makes it easy to get a nice squared up block.

I am very happy with this square and will use it a lot. It is compact and clear. It took a little while to arrrive but is worth waiting for and the quality is very good.

Great ruler for squaring up blocks in quilting. Grid is easy to see and center point is well marked. Used this ruler when making a strip quilt and needed the strip be exactly 8.5 square. I thought I had all the rulers I needed but then this one has turned out to be one that I have used frequently. I am a happy quilter with this one. As with any ruler, the ends justify the price. I have tried making my own using template material but they are only good for viewing- this ruler is tough and can be used with rotary cutter. It will last my lifetime I know.
