The Godox iM20 flash unit is an ultra-compact, lightweight flash, ideal for cameras without built-in flash capabilities. The package came with a user manual, cloth pouch, and a one-foot-long USB-C to USB-A charging cable. With a built-in battery that takes approximately an hour to charge, there’s no need for AA or AAA batteries. Compared to the iM30 flash unit, which I also own, the iM20 is noticeably smaller. It came with battery charge at 40%.The flash takes a few seconds to power on and offers straightforward operation. Its flash power output can be adjusted across five levels. It lacks TTL functionality, so manual setup and features a single-point contact design. Simply slide it into the camera's hot shoe, power it on, and it’s ready for use. While not particularly powerful, it works well with my Nikon Z cameras, which lack built-in flash. Power levels are easy to check by pressing both the "+" and "-" buttons simultaneously. The recycle time at full power is 3 seconds. At lower power levels, recycle time is around a second. A full charge should last for ~440 shots. Should be able to get more when used at lower levels.Outdoors, the iM20 is excellent for fill flash; however, indoors, it falls short for achieving a diffused, bounced-light look. Also, when shooting indoors, I don't use direct flash at the subject not just with this unit but any flash for that matter. For such a tiny flash, it has enough power, I am shooting at 40% power levels inside my house. This flash functions effectively with my Nikon, Sony, and Canon mirrorless and DSLR cameras when using shorter lenses. With longer lenses, such as the Nikon Z 24-70mm F4 S or other zoom lenses, the flash casts a shadow. This is expected since it is not tall. I will be using this flash only with smaller lenses. I have few other powerful flash units for use with longer / zoom lenses. The unit is likely compatible with most mirrorless and DSLR cameras, and possibly film cameras, provided the camera's hot shoe includes the center contact. If your camera lacks a built-in flash and you’re looking for a highly compact flash, the iM20 is worth considering. I am happy with this flash unit, it will be on my camera when I go out for walks.

This flash is super compact and lightweight (just 3.9 x 3.8 x 3 cm and 31g), which makes it perfect for travel or carrying around in your camera bag. Even though it’s small, the built-in 470mAh battery is strong—I took about 200 photos at full power, and it still had battery left. It has only three buttons and five power levels, so it’s pretty easy to use. It also comes with a soft pouch, a cleaning cloth, and a manual, which is a nice bonus. One thing to know is that this flash doesn’t support TTL, so you’ll need to use it in manual mode. That might be tricky for complete beginners, but if you understand the basics of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, it’s a great way to learn more and get better photos. It works really well even in super dark environment. The flash fires quickly in normal use, but if you take a lot of photos in a row (above 50), the pause between shots starts to slow down of up to about 5–6 (and more) seconds by the 70th photo. I have to note that there is no battery level indication at all, which is far from ideal as you'll never be sure how much charge is there (unless you just remember - highly unlikely though). It fits my Nikon D5600 perfectly. The USB-C charging port is on the side, next to the on/off/test button, but it's open one - no silicone/rubber cap to keep it closed off. There isn't a full compatibility list, but you can always simply check your camera’s hot shoe type. Overall, I’m really happy with this flash: it’s a great choice if you want to take cool nighttime photos, travel light, and learn more about photography at the same time, but a battery level indication, I think it's a must.

This small flash is very lightweight and comes with a small bag so it can be slipped into a pocket or bag with ease. The listing contains details of compatible cameras, so check yours is listed before going ahead. It works well as a small fill-in and it is good to have an adjustable output level. If you use longer/bulkier lenses however, it may be worth considering alternatives as this throws light close to the lens, which casts a shadow on images and you have no option to bounce it away. It’s great with a 50mm attached to the camera though.

Absolutely great flash. It's incredibly lightweight and compact and plenty powerful enough for most shooting scenarios, it can even be balanced with bright daylight (if you know how aperture and ISO sensitivity affect flash exposure). It's not the fastest to recharge (3s), but it's plenty fast for amateur shooting. It's about 2 times more powerful than the typical built-in camera flash. I couldn't find the exact guide number for this flash, but in my tests it's about 12 at ISO 100. Even if your camera has a more powerful flash built-in (which is rare), this one still has one huge benefit over the built-in one: you could use it as an external flash with a compatible remote.Overall, considering the incredibly low price of this flash, the excellent build quality (as always from GODOX) and it's versatility and performance, I think it's a no-brainer and a must-have purchase for anyone looking for a compact flash for their travel camera!

The diminutive Godox iM20 is one of the tiniest hot shoe mount flashes on the market. With that very small form factor come a few pluses and minuses. On the plus side, the size makes it convenient to have it with me at all times. When not on one of my cameras, it rides in the soft drawstring pouch that Godox supplied with it. That, then, goes in either my pocket or my compact EDC sling bag. Another plus, on the camera’s hot shoe, the tiny iM20 is unobtrusive and doesn’t cause people to shy away from being photographed like a speedlight often does. The iM20 slides into the camera’s hot shoe, where it is ably held in place by a friction fit. It works with virtually any camera, digital or film, that offers a center-pin contact on the hot shoe. There is no optical trigger or sync port. Mounted just above the lens, the iM20 produces a flat light reminiscent of flash pictures from decades ago.The iM20’s internal battery recharges via the USB-C port and is not replaceable. But the whole flash is less expensive than many of the batteries I use in photography and video. Despite the product’s tiny dimensions, it offers controls and status indicators that are easy to see and use. A button on the side of the flash serves as the On/Off switch when held in for a second or so. On the back are five miniature LEDs. One of these green LEDs will illuminate when the power is on. These indicators show the output power status in five increments. Whatever power setting was the last one used will be indicated by the LED that lights up when the unit is turned on. A button on each side of the horizontal row of LEDs, “-” on the left and “+” on the right, allows for a quick and easy increase or decrease in flash power output. When the flash is ON, a brief push of the power button provides a flash check. Translate: don’t look at the flash when you push that button. Don’t ask how I know.A big factor in fashion, wedding and a number of other photography genres is the flash recycle time, i.e., how quickly can you take multiple shots, given that the flash needs time for its capacitor to recharge between discharges. If you want a tiny flash with, of course, a tiny internal battery, you’re going to have to live with the slow recycling time. It’s nothing personal; it’s just physics. If you are like I, you have larger speedlights and/or strobes for those applications that demand them. This is its own fun little tool that can meet some, not all, needs. So yes, the iM20 has obvious limitations. Of course, there is no TTL or other auto function. That’s to be expected. Besides the low power output and the slow recycle time, the most obvious limitation, perhaps, comes from the flash position in line with the lens, which typically gives that “old-timey” flash look. While that is not usually looked at as a good thing, attach the word “retro” to that look and it will have a following these days. And, with some care, the iM20 can provide a little fill light for a nearby subject when needed. Another result of the flash position, particularly how low it sits on the camera body, especially on rangefinder-style cameras, is that a larger or longer lens can block some of the light pattern and create a shadow in the bottom of the frame. However, while it would appear that the iM20 can be used only in the hot shoe on your camera, and that actually is its normal operation mode, I have had some fun using a wireless flash trigger system to allow me to hold the iM20 above and to one side of the camera with one hand and the camera in the other. This trigger system is just a transmitter on the camera hot shoe and a separate receiver that has a hot shoe for the iM20. The only advantage is that I can get the flash off the camera, placed at the height and angle I choose. The results have been quite satisfying. I’ve also used the iM20 to optically trigger a speedlight. The output level and directional beam of the iM20 place some limitations on this technique, but it can be done if desired, even if just for fun.So, is the iM20 going to replace any of my Godox speedlights? No, not when power or the direction of the light is a factor. But it will always be with me. And, like cameras, sometimes the best flash just might be the one you have with you.

This min speedlite flash is an excellent portable flash for photographers who need a lightweight and versatile option. It’s small yet powerful, delivering 440 full-power flashes on a single charge, thanks to the built-in lithium battery. The five power levels provide good control over lighting, making it a solid choice for portrait, event, and street photography. One of the standout features is its universal compatibility with all major camera brands. The single-contact hot shoe design ensures broad usability, though it does limit advanced TTL features. That said, for manual flash users, it’s simple to operate and provides consistent light output. While the battery life is impressive, the recycle time at higher power levels is a bit slower than expected. Additionally, the lack of tilt/swivel limits flexibility for bounce lighting. It’s best suited for direct flash or use with external diffusers.Overall, this flash is a fantastic mini flash for those who need a compact, long-lasting, and budget-friendly option. While it’s not ideal for advanced users needing TTL or full adjustability, it’s a great travel-friendly flash for everyday shooting.
