The Fishtail Set gets into areas no other gouges will fit. These delicate-looking hand tools allow you to carve tiny details, and their unique shape makes them surprisingly versatile.
Fishtail gouges have a longer shaft that only flares out to the sweep and side near the end. This shape allows you to fit into tight areas, and with practice, allows you to carve a variety of curves and shapes with just the corner of your chisel.
- While its possible to start carving with this factory-sharpened set immediately, the edges will cut better with a bit of finessing and polishing.

Twice a year, 21st Century Heroes provides a seven-day therapeutic and professionally instructed woodcarving workshop to combat wounded veterans.
Hands-on, small group classes are taught in a relaxed environment and are designed to offer the vets with sufficient knowledge and confidence in order for them to continue woodworking when they return to their homes.
We look forward to continuing our support of 21st Century Heroes, and other impactful programs in the years to come.

I was excited to see fishtail chisels at such a reasonable price. Like a few other reviewers, I did have some issues with the edges - in my case, the actual cutting edges. I reached out to Schaaf Tools, and heard from them the next day! One could not ask for better customer service. I received beautiful replacements - each one perfect - and am very pleased. It is very refreshing to deal with a company that stands so solidly behind their product!

I bought Schaaf Wood Carving Tools Set of 4 | Chisel Set with Canvas Case | Fishtail Gouges to Reach into Spaces Other Chisels Can’t | Razor Sharp CR-V 60 Steel Blades | Wood Carving Kit as a price effective way to build my carving tool stock. Pros: • Comfortable to hold for extended periods. • Sizes marked on handles Cons: • Not carving sharp out of the box. • Don't hold an edge very well. Needs to be honed more frequently than other brands. • Schaaf 'brand' etched on shafts. Better quality tools etch sizes on shaft in case handles break or wear out. Not for beginners who don't know how to sharpen steel, and not for more experienced carvers because they don't hold an edge very well. Basically overpriced because of unearned hype.

After wasting money on cheap gouges that couldn't scratch jello, I decided to buy these and I'm so glad I did. They arrived extremely sharp, and the high quality from top to bottom is clear. I will definitely be buying more Schaaf tools.

I bought these because I'm at a stage in my model ship build where my standard Swiss straight chisels no longer work. I opted for the "professionally hand sharpened" version of these becausea) I was under the impression that a these were made in the United States andb) they were in fact professionally sharpened.The first thing I noticed when I opened the package from Amazon was the phrase made in China clearly represented on the box. And the photo demonstrates that if these were professionally sharpened, they need to fire whoever this professional was. I thought I could save time by not having the sharpen these myself, never having owned fishtail chisels before. I'm going to keep them and sharpen them myself, but save yourself the money and by the non-sharpened version. Furthermore, if you think you're getting Swiss made chisels, think again. Shop elsewhere.

Initial review upon opening.Nice canvas tool roll. Good hard steel set firmly in hardwood octagon handles.They need sharpening.Impressive but not worth any more than the $50 they are asking.All in all a good working set of fishtail gouges.

Just spent a couple of hours sharpening and reprofiling where necessary for my purposes, all looking good and cutting well, just need to get using them on a project now.

I have really taken to these chisels. I now own 2 sets: these and the 12 piece set and the diamond sharpener. All of their products are excellent, top notch and strong. Most of the sharpening I've had to do is a buffing on a felt (with rouge) wheel to put a fresh edge polish back. The handles feel good in the hand,. The length of chisel shafts is just right for deep and shallow carving. I'm a beginner and these are a big help to making carving easier.

Very good quality steel, well made. They do need to be sharpened as do all such tools. I had a problem with one tool being mounted in the handle at an angle, but the tool was replaced quickly and cheerfully by their excellent customer service. Good tools, great service.
