STAY AWAY from this “renewed” product. Mine arrived with an empty toner cartridge and Amazon had miserable - and i mean miserable support. This was the first “renewed” product I ever purchased and apparently Amazon doesn’t stand behind renewed products like they do brand new.

This is particular to the 404dn without wireless networking. I set this up for my Mother-in-law with a usb connection as wired networking is not feasible. Some of the features in the driver, which is a browser configuration, did not work without a network connection (I was trying to change a few parameters like sleep). These can likely be changed on the control panel but it was a surprise to me with a direct connection. But the strangest thing is that the driver was a generic driver for the series that was not set up for auto duplexing, which is obviously built in to the printer. It defaulted to manual duplexing (which would be for the 404 without networking with manual duplexing). I had to figure out on my own that by going into the printer properties panel, under printer settings, I could set the duplexer option to yes, or installed. This is usually for a duplexer installed as a separate unit, not for built-in! Just be aware that there may be some set-up quirks, even if the installation goes smoothly (which it did). The printer seemed to be working flawlessly once I got this figured out.

HP has a chip on their toner cartridges for 404DN, and an aftermarket cartridge will not work unless you transfer the chip from the spent HP cartridge. It's kind of pain, and really cheesy on HP's part. The HP cartridges cost $105, which is a lot for a $180 printer. It's the old "give the a free razor, and make on the backend with blades." Ditto the HP color printers with their ridiculously low prices color printers, and costly inkjet cartridges. If you want to save money, long-term the 402 is a better deal and much better printer. From time to time, about once a day, the 404 DN tends to print garbage, i.e. a page of programing code. It is usually when printing a pdf file. The 404 is a piece of junk. I had a perfectly good, heavy duty, expensive HP printer that became useless when HP would not support the printer driver for Windows 10. HP used to be the vanguard for laser printers. Now the company is the scam-guard.
