This device appears to be pretty handy. It is small and lightweight. But I tried measuring the distance to some walls and compared to a measuring tape. Not even close. With such poor accuracy I guess this will just go in the trash. I took a couple pictures of my test measurements.

This is tiny, easy to throw it in your pocket, and takes up almost no space in a toolbox, glove compartment or bag. Very accurate measurements, I checked a few against a tape measure, it works pretty flawlessly. All kinds of features, including finding areas and volumes, calculating trigonometric lengths, remembering a history of measurements, and finding maximum and minimum distances as you sweep it around. All good stuff, and shown on a bright, very readable display. My only complaint is that nothing is intuitive or easy to figure out. The instructions spell it out, but not very clearly--see my photo of the instructions for some of the simpler operations. Even a straight simple measurement isn't intuitive, requiring 2 separate pushes of a button that's not labeled in any clear way. I get that trying to pack features into something this small and having things intuitive and clearly labeled is a very big challenge. But I feel they could have done better on this score. But overall this is an impressive little device that I'm going to get a lot of use of, especially now that I'm finally start to get the hang of doing different things with it.

Okay, the two issues I dealt with right out of the box. It's very small and my old eyes had a hard time reading the small screen, but that's something to think about as well as the ability to learn how it works. The 24 or so page instruction sheet had such small print that my highest level readers still didn't help. If you need readers, be prepared or look elsewhere. What I ended up doing was scanning three pages at a time, then I loaded the image to Photoshop, cropped it and resized the image to 10.5" wide x (it depended)". I didn't try any of the other magic in Photoshop but copied the resulting file back to my laptop. I then loaded up a page in Word and inserted the image on a page in landscape. The images that only had 3 plus inches on the paper, I drug the bottom of the image to a little over 7" and the page looked good. I proceeded to do the same thing 8 more times until I had a readable manual a couple hours later.Vendors out there, a suggestion I'd highly recommend- do this prior than selling idems and post a link on your ad to a downloadable, people friendly manual. It will certainly improve the feedback. The second disappointment, after I understood how it worked, is how difficult it is to get an accurate reading. You'll need a really steady hand to get close to an accurate reading. The other method that gets closer is if you can rest it on someting as you use it. This is going to take some experimentation.I ordered it to get a rough estimate of the heighth of trees that need to be dropped on my property. It can be rough, but I need to get within a foot or two of the actual heigth. The tool itself seems to work fine and has a number of functions that I probaly will never use. The two that I'll experiment with most are, first, the Primary Pythagorean mode where you take a reading from where you're standing, aimed at the base and one aimed at the top and the tool will calculate the heigth, If you remember any of your geometry, a squared plus b squared equals c squared. The second is done by taking a reading at the top to a point somewhere on its length, then a third at the bottom and it will calculate the total length in inches, feet ot meters. Will it work for my intended usage is yet to be seen but I wanted to put initial impressions out as a first take that won't need to be changed. What still is unknown is the visibility of the beam under normal daylight 70 foot up a tree, whether I can get it steady so when I push the button it doesn't shake all over the place and the accuracy of the final result. I'll update as soon as possible.

With $29.99, I got so many functions in one device, could not ask for more. There is a bit of learning curve, but hey, it is what so called multi-functional! Exceptional product!

Fantastic and precise tool, the ability to switch between front and rear datum points is incredibly useful. It's made from solid stuff and totally worth picking up.
