Taps come in many different styles, and a tap of this size/configuration is quite expensive from the supply house. Spiral flute taps are really great because you can tap the entire hole without having to stop and reverse the tool, or withdraw it to clear the chips. This tap comes in a plastic sleeve of minimal thickness, but it is adequate for protecting the sharp cutting edges. And yes, the edges are very sharp. Everything looks well-machined and professionally ground. Before I tried any test cuts I noticed the tip has a very aggressive grind to it. The taper is only about 2 threads deep, which is typical of a bottoming tap (used to finish the last few threads of a blind hole). I have tried tapping a complete hole with a bottoming tap before and didn't have much luck. The front edges tend to fight the thread pitch and they end up stripping out most of the threads before they finish cutting. So, with skepticism I decided to test this thing out. I drilled a piece of 1043 carbon steel to a diameter of 0.650", which is appropriate for a 77% thread and a 3/4-10 tap. I started out with my 11" tap handle but it didn't give me enough leverage. With the 16" handle I could make good progress, and at first the tap seemed to be cutting quite well despite the high torque requirements. After cutting about 1/2" of threads I could feel the tap starting to slip however, and the finished hole was not pretty. Just as I had suspected the aggressive taper was making the tap cut away the rear-most threads. If this tap was sold and labeled as a bottoming tap I would be giving it 4 or 5 stars. It is inexpensive, well-made, and very sharp. But it is quite useless as a general-purpose tap. It can only be used for chasing damaged threads or as a bottoming tap unless you were to have it professionally reground.

I have always depended on the kindness of strangers. In this case on the review of Cody W. C. who discovered and shared - 'this is more of a bottom tap not a taper tap.' I am very happy I read his review, because I would have tested this on a 1/2" piece of mild steel, and I would have been happy opposite if I had fried a brand new 40 dollar 3/4” tap for no good reason. I compared this to my other large taper taps and Cody is indeed correct – the taper on this tap is shallower on this tap than any of my other large diameter taper taps. Still, though, it's not a true bottom tap either. What to do, what to do? Guess I'll put some mustard in my shoe and call this one a very nice well machined 3/4” - 10 thread chaser. I've chased some thread with it and it, of course, works great for that.Glad to have this tap. I restore vintage machinery and two of my wood lathes have the 3/4” - 10 thread pitch. Won't have to visit my neighbor down the street when I have the need to chase this pitch. Still, a little bummed I won't feel comfortable using it for cutting new threads. Good to have 4 metal lathes that will cut it though – just takes longer.3 Stars for the MaxTool 3/4-10 thread chaserThanks for Reading - Have an Incredible Life!
