In breaking apart our piano to dispose it, you will need to remove all of the tuning pins. I have tried using a 12-point 1/4" socket but it just rounds the pins. This 4-point socket is deeper and does not round out the tuning pins. Considering there are 200+ pins to remove, this socket is an absolute must have. This socket connects directly to the drill chuck.

Use a 3/8 socket adapter if using a ratchet. Otherwise attaches directly to cordless drill chuck. Have 2 or 3 batteries. Tool is so far superior to others its not even funny. Time to extract piano tuning pin is 10 seconds. Use a good name brand cordless drill. No cheap stuff.

I had tried this tool with my loghtweight, everyday drill and it kept slipping. Honestly, it frustrated me to the point of writing a bad review of this product. Reactionary, I guess. Anyways, I saw the other reviews and decided to try it with my heavy duty hammer corded drill and sure enough it works great. I am dismantling my piano since no one will take it and bulk trash said its too heavy so I am taking it apart in pieces and will put the cast iron out during bulk instead. Its doing the job. I gave it 4 stars because it would have been more useful to have a 5 sided drill bit end or a socket wrench end instead of this 3-sided end. Other than that, it was an expensive tool to throw a piano away lol.

If you are dismantling a piano then this is the tool bit you will need. I tried putting together a similar tool using big box store parts and after about 20 of the tuning bolts, the tool bit stripped and rounded off. This one is perfect for the job and let me successfully unscrew and remove the 200+ tuning bolts without failure or stripping. It would be even better if it was made for an impact driver instead of a drill.

The pin socket tool was a lifesaver when it came to dismantling an upright piano. The inside bore is 0.23” (15/64”) and fit the pins in a Kohler & Campbell piano perfectly. Note that if the pins are too tight, you made need to use a ratchet wrench with the socket to loosen the pin. The triangular pin socket shaft fits a 3/8” socket for use with the ratchet. My 3/8” drill was not powerful enough to loosen the pin initially.

This was worth every penny. I had a 120 year old piano that I needed to dispose of. Old pianos like this have negative value. The cost to move them is higher than their value. The deconstruction takes some time. One difficult part is removing the wires. There were 255 pins/wires to remove. This tool made it much easier. It still takes time as the wires get tangled once the tension is released. You can buy a less costly tool for tuning, but it would take far longer to remove pins with a tuning tool. The only down side to this tool is that you will probably only ever need it once. This is not a project I want to do again.
