I haven't had it long but I like the way I can see the numbers from a distance.

We have a copper gauge that looks similar to this one, but does cost more. This one is made in China and is made of thin, cheap plastic. The inch lines are not accurate either. The piece that holds the gauge (that goes into ground) is made of metal. I decided it would be cheaper in the long run to buy the nonbreakable copper one, made in USA, instead of this one.

UPDATE: It works! We had an inch of rain today so I put my glass one next to it (see photo) to see if they measured the same. It does. For those of you writing reviews that these are not copper, no where in the description does it say it is. You’re not going to pay $20 for copper. I actually think they look nice. Time will tell how they hold up to the sun and if they fade. Also hasn’t rained yet so I can’t comment if it actually works. I’ll update my post when it does.

I'm a bit of a weather nerd and I'd love to have a full-scale weather station some day. Failing that, this pretty little rain gauge makes a fun, useful lawn accessory. It's very simple: just a plastic outer tube in the same handsome terra cotta color as an earthen flower pot, and an inner tube in a translucent blue that looks beautiful against the terra cotta and stands out noticeably when rain has lifted it up. The inner tube is marked in bright white paint in large numerals from 1 to 5, with 1/4-inch increments in between. It has foam in the bottom so that, as rain fills the outer tube, the inner tube floats up, exposing the marked measurements to show how much rain is inside. Supporting the tubes is a handsome spiral of glossy black metal with a spike at the bottom to be poked into the earth.Very simple and ingenious. I put it in the middle of my yard, far from any buildings or tree branches, but close enough to the living room windows that we can look outside and read the measurements. (It may help to use binoculars on a dim day. Our neighborhood was in the midst of a dry spell when the gauge first arrived, so we had to wait a few days to test it, but the other day it finally started raining. Overnight, the gauge measured 1 1/4 inches of rain. I don't know how precisely accurate that is, but it's roughly the same amount that the Weather Service told us to expect. Now I just have to remember to go out and empty it before the next rain -- easily done as the plastic tubes will lift right out of the supporting spiral without having to disturb it.It looks attractive, it can be easily moved temporarily out of the way when it's time to mow the lawn, and it adds a little fun to my weather obsession. A nice little device!
