This is a suprisingly well made tool.It would be stonger if it was made of steel not aluminum. But if you take care of it I think it should last a long time.

I was a little nervous at first, being a handyman/homeowner... And NOT a professional. But this is an exceptionally easy to use and well-made tool from the Dochard store.You get everything you need, in a very nice storage box, to do a professional looking job. I was not looking forward to upgrading the basement stairs in our older home. I've learned years ago that nothing about my house is square, plum, or true!Not much of a learning curve... Easy to put together and easy to read. (I did do a test-run using cardboard before cutting into the expensive oak treads.) You need to use the washers correctly to ensure that the tool tightens properly, and your template stays accurate.Good quality tool and a real time saver. Worth every penny!

This is a nice kit, It comes self-contained in a compact kit that is easily stored away for convenience. I haven't used it for my job yet but for a person who doesn't have one level surface in their old home, this is going to be invaluable for so many things. Even measuring twice your measurements don't always come out accurately. I did a test run on some stair treads and after reading a few of the other reviews about adding washers and some of the suggestions they made, I found I had no problems getting the jig to screw down securely and stay solid to the adjustments of the width of the staircase. I have some outdoor stairs that are in very bad shape and have been putting off addressing the issue because I didn't have a tool like this and won't have months to make corrections, I am looking forward to tackling this project now. The majority of my projects I do alone and tools like these are the reason they come out looking decent. Nice kit with thoughtful and sturdy construction, it's a project lovers must have.

Overall worked good. The screws didn't tighten quite enough and you had to be careful that the length and the angle of the end pieces didn't change. I realized that if I used two rubber washers on each side of the aluminum it tighten up much better.

I was very impressed with this product. This stair tread and closed shelf measuring tool is a really great addition to your tools before tackling tread installation on a set of stairs with walls on both sides. If your home is like mine and all others, even if the walls look parallel, they are not, so the built-in protractors on both ends to get the proper miter saw angles (or pencil marking tracing) the first time are a huge help.There were no instructions in the box, but this was easy to assemble for use. The three metal lengths (two each length) that are included make it easy to select the right combination to create the size that you need. The rigid metal extensions have a special bolt to not spin in a recess to allow for easy tightening but be sure to add the rubber washer between extension or end pieces to prevent accidental movement once tightened. When removing from the plastic case to assemble for use, lay the extensions out on the tread you'll be measuring to select the right combination of lengths and line up the fixed hole with the slot; you can then layer the slides using an over/under pattern as shown in the first photo to make them more rigid versus building the combination to be too many layers which may become slightly less accurate.Use on closed cabinet shelves would be a bit more difficult if the shelf is narrower than the 12" ends behind a face frame but would work great if no face frame is overhanging.Buying this jig will save you time and the hassle and expense of a miscut on expensive stair treads making it a good investment for even retreading a single set of stairs.
