I wanted an awl that would hold the same size needle I use for my paper embroidering, and stuck out three times until I came across this little beauty. It's perfect! Tightens up on and grips my smaller size 8 embroidery needles for punching holes, without slipping. The entire device is comfortable to use. HIGHLY recommend for this type of work.

They come in different sizes that all look the same? Color me surprised. I own a 166C that is really awesome. My daughter is making jewelry and needed to drill little holes through the heads of tiny solid plastic baby dolls. I offered to buy her a pin vice because I love mine so much. When it arrived I was shocked to find out that it was a tiny version of the one I already have. Now my daughter has my 166C and I have a 166A and am waiting for my new 166C to arrive in the mail.Make sure you check on the size of the pin vice before ordering. The 166A is a great pin vice if you want to hole really REALLY small drill bits or, you know, actual pins.

I wasn’t quite expecting just how tiny this pin vise is. Was hoping for something about a pens girth, but this is much closer to a basic wooden pencil in terms of width, and though its a weighty material, its not tungsten so at its size, its just not got the weight i wanted, but enough about my misinterpretations of the buy page, how is it in person?Firstly, a bit awkward. This was my first pin vise, so it took some messing around to find how was most comfortable to hold it, but once I figured it out, its alright.Sadly the bits i purchased aren’t spectacular, so I’m not really sure how good the vise is, and even worse, because of its small size it actually wont fit the bits up to 1.5mm i was hoping to use, so its really only going to be useful for drilling barrels for the guns on miniatures and perhaps the occasional DIY improvement.Build quality is good, materials are good, I just wish it was 2” longer and 2-3 times as thick. I’d pay a good deal for that imaginary perfect pin vise, but in lieu, I guess this one will have to do.

This cost significantly more than any of the other pin vises I own. I use extremely small sizes of drill bits, and none of my other pin vises could hold the thinnest ones securely. After reading the glowing reviews of the Starrett pin vises, I decided to bite the bullet. I’m so glad I did! While this pin vise is considerably shorter than my other ones, I quickly got used to the different feel and find it more comfortable than those others. Most importantly, it holds even my thinnest drill bits (#80) extremely securely. Well worth the money.

I needed to drill some tiny holes for the miniature baskets that my wife makes. I had purchased a set of micro-drills, but the 3-jaw pin vise that came with them was cheap and would not hold the drills straight. This made drilling holes by hand next to impossible. This Starrett pin vise lives up to the Starrett name and is a precision holder for the micro drills. They are securely held and line up perfectly along the axis of the handle making for easy hand drilling. Even though Starrett tools cost more, I've never been let down by their quality.

I had initially made the wrong choice and got the “amazon choice” no name pin vise with bits. Huge mistake... vise was junk. This vise is just perfect, holds bits straight and true. Had I initially purchased this I wouldn’t have wasted so much time. Couldn’t be happier with this purchase. The old adage you get what you pay for is just simply true...

This replaces a cheapy pin vise that sorta' worked. I guess I had to go the cheap route and let if fail before I could justify the purchase of a Starrett. I wish I had done so years ago! The fit and finish is great. The rotation of the collar as it tightens around the collet is smooth. The collet jaws meet dead-center, which keeps the drill bit running true. The knurls are deep and provide plenty of "traction", even if my hands are a bit greasy. The octagonal handle keeps it from rolling off the benchtop, but still allows it to rotate freely between my fingers.The only reason I would need to replace this is if I lose it. It will last a lifetime. It "feels right". It is substantial enough to have the weight to feed the drill bit without the need to put lots of pressure on the bit. It feels like a quality tool, and small enough to be maneuverable and get the job done. Always willing to support a company that is still manufacturing in the US. (Keep the money on this side of the ocean!) It is a PLEASURE to use, which always makes the project more fun. :-DThe sooner you get it, the sooner you can enjoy using it.

This seems like a well-made tool - what you would expect from Starrett. But the picture is a little misleading - you don't get 4 sizes as in the picture - you just get one. If you want the whole set you can order 166Z for the set.I didn't really expect to get a set of 4, given the price, but still, 4 were pictured, so I was sort of hoping...
