This item had apparently been returned as there were records in the memory. It reads really fast and does not have to be directly on the skin as another model did.

Initial thoughts: compact, lightweight, easy to navigate the menus. The volume of the beeps is obnoxiously loud as shipped, but it's easy to set the beep volume to 0 in the settings. I tested on one dog and it scanned the chip and I was able to look it up, so that part works. I connected to a PC via Bluetooth, which shows up as a keyboard, then used the 'upload BT' function in the scanner menu and pasted the stored codes into Notepad. Clunky, but usable.BUT, after using it to scan one dog and upload the data to a PC, the display froze and the device was unusable. I removed screws from the case and unplugged the battery to reset it, only for it to freeze again after scrolling through menus and letting it sit for a few minutes.I'm returning this one and I am willing to try another of the same model. I'll update my review if the new model doesn't freeze.EDIT: The second device did the same thing. I scanned one dog, viewed the chip IDs in memory, and the screen froze/buttons were unresponsive. There were already previous chip IDs stored in memory, so I assume this one was purchased, found to be defective, returned, and then resold.

Love it! It came fully charged and it was immediately easy to use. I like the way it fits in my palm too! Very comfortable. We frequently get a domestic looking dog or kitty who look a little lost on our front porch so i am now able to scan them and usually get them back home. Im very thankful for this.

I do cat rescue (TNR, owner assistance, foster) as a volunteer in the field, sonI am CONSTANTLY using these. It works great, is easy to use (could be a little quieter), and the battery life seems to last forever.It's not a global scanner, but the director of the rescue I work with has one of the fancy ones. So far my cheap little tool has only missed one chip (out of hundreds of cats)

This is a great product. It scans several types of chips where many scanners read only one or two types. The display indicated the type of chip along with the number, and battery level. It seemed fully charged when it arrived though I did plug it into a digital charge bank and it took a 0.5 amp charge. The unit charges via USB C and comes with a cord but not a wall plug. A cellphone wall plug works fine, so does any device with a USB port. The up down button bring up a menu and work as scroll keys. The round button is both the power on (instant) and Enter key. To shut it off, you must use the shut down option at the bottom of the menu (scroll)

I have two dogs, and both are microchip. One has a home again microchip and the other has a 24 pet watch microchip, and this device detected both microchips easily. For reference, I am located in North Texas in the USA. At $17 this was honestly a steal for me! I highly recommend it.
