I held it too long before using or I definitely would have returned it. You put in these little rubber inserts to adjust to the diameter of your seat post. The rubber nubs are too big for the hole, and Thor with his hammer could not get them in.I asked the bike people at REI, who also sells it, and they say this issue with the not fitting is constant and routine with the product.I had another one ten years ago, and it was fine then.

As other reviewers said, you can't tighten the QR enough to prevent the terrible slipping, which is an unforgivable Topeak oversight. Fix it by using Park Tool SAC-2 Supergrip on the rubber shims. It's just silica sand in a grease carrier. Or make your own with grease and fine sand or other abrasive. Problem solved! The other Topeak problem is the damn clamp is too big and my thighs barely touch it at every stroke. I can tolerate it, but how did Topeak let this get into production? This and the slipping.I like everything else. It's a pretty piece of kit, and now I can stow extra clothes or whatever on my bikes without rack mounting eyelets. It's easy off when you don't want the extra junk.I haven't tried the bungee cord thing. They are pretty, but look kinda fragile and useless.

Purchased the “V” model of this bike rack. Easy to install - just follow the instructions or go to YouTube videos - with the provided rubber inserts. Lever lock once adjusted allows for easy on-off of the rack. The “V” model is the one to get for 29 inch mountain bikes.I installed this unit on a older Cannondale mountain bike circa 2004. Fit perfectly. Added the MTX D trunk and modified a 12 inch milk crate with the MTX mount. Excellent system for touring/day trips using the D expandable trunk case. I use the modified milk crate on the mountain bike to hold tools, irrigation parts and supplies in our vineyard up and down the rows. Works great and saves me walking time.Hey - it’s an old mountain bike! No more technical trails, just vineyard rows! Still great fun and exercise.

This rack is great - extremely easy to install and take off; sturdy; tough. The only drawback I can see is that you're limited to also buying a Topeak pack to go on the rack. That's why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.

I bought this for my carbon bike so I could do a little camping and it works great. I can't afford a whole new bike for this purpose so I was using my road bike and I wanted it to be easily removable since this is an occasional event. With that in mind, it works great. The only issue I had is that when fully loaded (20lb) with the mtx bag and panniers, and because there is no connection to the seat stays or the chain stays, there is a lot of wobble when you get up out of the saddle. In fact, anything over 5 mph is really almost impossible. I did 6000 ft. of climbing and couldn't get up out of the saddle even once without wobbling. I might try using velcro straps to the chain stays next time to reduce the lateral sway, but I doubt it will work. The rack doesn't swing back and forth, it's very well connected to the seat post, but the lateral flexing under load is very pronounced. If you plan on doing hardcore camping I'd get the pannier rack that mounts to the frame if you can. If you are a commuter, this is probably going to be just fine.I'm very happy with the product, and had a great time camping!

This rack works great and is very well built. The rack grips my seat stem very securely. It can be moved if, for instance you kick it while mounting the bicycle, however, it certainly grips tightly enough to hold position during ride, even when fully loaded. Removing and re-installing pack is slick and convenient. Outstanding design. Make sure you order the proper rack type...the V Type worked great for my Cannondale T-1000. Unable to use fanny pack with this, however, not needed if you have a Topeak bag with side pockets. Further, if you ride without a bag, only using the rack as a fender, then a fanny pack would work fine.

My bike will not accomodate a regular rack so my options are limited. Sure, I could rig something up with stay clamps, but when I don't need the rack it would be a pain to take off. This rack gets the job done, plus it's so easy to install/remove...quick release! The rack does have a tendancy to shift, but to alleviate this I recommend whipping off your seat post with alcohol to remove any grease/dirt to ensure a good seal, it will help cut down on lateral movement of the rack.If you're just using the trunk bag without panniers you don't have much to worry about if the rack shifts a little to one side or the other. If you're going to use the pannier bags you'll want to get the pannier adapter kit to keep the bags out of your spokes. This is when the rack shift can cause a problem and cause the pannier adapter to rub on your back wheel.I did a 332 mile ride in 5 days and only had to adjust the rack a few times because it shifted. I road in solid rain for two days and I think that helped the rack slide more so than it would have if I had been riding in dry conditions. I was able to nudge the rack back into position with my foot while riding so it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if it were an option just for the fact that the rack is prone to shifting when fully loaded...but it is what it is. Just keep in mind to make sure your seat post is free of dust & grease and it should minimize any sideways movement.Updated: 6/17/15:I did another 372 mile bike trip...Same trip in reverse. I opted to go with another Topeak rack given the lateral movement I mentioned in my initial review. I've attached a pic with the QR Beam Rack MTX in the background.
