  • Find your lens filter size (in mm) printed near the Ø symbol on the lens or back of the lens cap. You can also find your filter size on your lens cap, or search online with your lens model, e.g., "Canon EF 24mm f1.4L USM II filter size" for 77mm.

  • Urth has two ranges: Urth (standard) with Japanese AGC glass and an 8-layer nano-coating, and Urth Plus+ (professional) with German SCHOTT glass and a 20-layer nano-coating (30 layers for UV Plus+).

  • Yes, our filters are double-threaded for stacking. For best image quality, use only one filter at a time as stacking can cause vignetting. Avoid stacking more than two filters.

  • Variable ND: Good for changing light.

    Fixed ND: Best for control.

    Remember, higher ND numbers mean more light restriction. For bright conditions or silky water effects, use ND64 to ND1000. ND64 is versatile for most situations.

  • For wide-angle and telephoto lenses, we recommend our Variable ND2-32, ND8-128 or fixed ND filters to avoid an x-cross effect in your photos.

VND’s are known to have their challenges. My search for one had a few criteria:- German Schott glass- No significant color cast- priced fairlyMy favorite filters, and the highest quality produced, are made by breakthrough photography. They strictly use German schott glass, which is the highest quality glass on the market. Unfortunately breakthrough doesn’t make circular VND’s so URTH is the only brand I found to also use this glass. Super impressed. I found there to be no extreme color cast and the price is very fair when you compare to the Nisi or Polar Pro. These are also the filters used in the box office film “the creator” and you can imagine they did their fair share of testing.The cherry on top is that they plant a tree for every purchase. Top notch.

It's pretty well made, the glass and coating seem very good, the markings line up pretty decently with the actual points at which attenuation is 2, 3, 4, etc stops, which is nice for use with a rangefinder. Like many variable ND filters made with polarizers, it's not actually that neutral in tone - it's more of a warm brown. For black and white or digital with AWB it's not enough to make much difference, but for color film especially transparency film it will add a noticeable warm cast.

I like the fact that Urth use German Schott glass for their Plus+ range. I'm not an authority on glass quality but everything I read about Schott was positive. There is always debate about whether one should or shouldn't use UV filters, whether to filter UV or to protect the front element: I am firmly in camp of protecting the front element of my expensive lens. A strong positive for me is the fact that Urth plants trees to offset their carbon impact, and you get to "plant" five trees on purchase, with a further five using a code on the packaging. The packaging itself is recyclable and the the filter holder is a robust metal unit that will withstand abuse and keep dust out. They also provide a handy cleaning cloth with each filter.

I like the ND filter for its flexibility and good range. It is particularly good for shooting video. However, when put the filter on, the original lens hood will not fit. If the lens focal length is not too short, the filter works well. In really wide angle lens it may have strong color cast, just like CPL effect, which is not the case if using fixed ND filters.

I recently purchased a fixed 3 stop ND filter from URTH and it turned out to be just fine. I also like to shoot video and keep my aperture, shutter speed, and ISO fixed, which can only be done with a VR ND. I purchased the 1 to 5 stop Pro+ from URTH and it is absolutely amazing. The quality for the price point can't be beat.

For the money it is more than good, but i mostly prefer it because of the size. It is definitely not bad but still if i need a bit better quality and more accurate colors, i use my reliable old ones.
