I hated to solder. My soldering iron was over 30 yrs old. I had a hard time getting the solder to stick to my desired objects/wires.This unit heats up very quickly. It comes with soldering wire. The biggest difference was buying some flux, and that made all the difference in the world. This also came with stuff to clean your soldering iron, several types of tips, a suction device to help de-solder stuff. It holds the soldering tip nicely when you need a place to rest it. You also get this braid like material that you can also use to de-solder stuff from circuit boards. This braid seems to work better than the suction device.I've used it to replace blown capacitors on a 16 port switch as well as solder wires together for installation of new stereos (aka head units) in our cars as well as back up cameras in both cars.

The system is amazing. The downside is that the solder that came with the set was too thick and was also lead free. I understand the lead free/ RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) selection yet the thickness is surprising. I purchased the set to solder some components on a pinball machine. I could not get a good solder joint due to my limited skill with lead free solder and the thickness. I'm not talking fine pitch stuff. I ended up buying completely new thinner solder with lead and it worked great. As an entry level set I recommend thinner, lead-free solder.Why did I use solder with lead? I'm more comfortable with how it works. It is not hazardous unless you inhale the vapors and do it all day. Solder techs are protected by exhaust vents that keep the fumes away. In the Aircraft and Space industries, solder with lead is required due to certain issues.

I solder regularly with leaded and lead free solder. This unit gets plenty hot to solder wires with higher mass, and the digital control appears to be accurate enough for general purpose use. the tips hold up and have not deteriorated after using a mix if leaded and lead free solder at higher than typical temperatures.

This is a nice soldering station for my use. I really like the fact that it can be turned off when not in use and then will come up to soldering temperature in about 30 seconds. This really saves the soldering tip in my opinion.The tip cleaner and sponge (when moistened with water) is nice and works well. The solder that comes with it works well soldering my Arduino projects. I usually set the temperature to about 750 degrees and that works for me. It does have a sleep mode when not in use but I just turn it off with the switch instead when not soldering.The solder roll holder is pretty much useless for my use and I did not bother attaching it. The solder roll will not stay on it in my estimation.

Replaced an older model. The old tips would not heat up but the new tips that came with it work fine. Suggest having spare tips on hand and a spare heater core.

After my first use with it, I was less impressed than I was before using it. Largely because it's unstable and likes to walk.There's no way to permanently affix it to anything. Personally i would find a piece of plywood or something like that, to hold it in place.If you put the soldering iron in its home "too hard" it locks into place, feeding the need for the above, and having to wrestle it out while your holding solder in your other hand. I feel are better option would be a quarter turn holding (if it's necessary to lock it in place) instead of a snap in.It does heat up fast but not as fast as more expensive ones, and it cools down at a fair rate, again not as fast as more expensive ones.It comes a sleep function, I didn't time it, but it seemed to be a goldilocks amount of time.

I do stained glass and wood burning as hobbies. I recently replaced my soldering iron for stained glass with one by this company, and immediately decided to upgrade my pyrography iron as well. They are so comfortable to hold, and work great. I have much better control of temperature now too. Love it.
