I ordered this light as a replacement for my hermit crab tank. I had one previously, used it on every night and it lasted approximately 6 to 8 years. This is my first replacement! I ordered the same exact one I had because it had lasted so long and worked well in his crabitat.

Works great, as far as I know. These always last longer than I need them to considering you are supposed to replace them every 6 months. They keep my little guys from getting MBD. Great price here on Amazon, too.

I sometimes get a bit confused about the distance these bulbs need to be placed from the animal (I went with what the manufacturer website suggests for this bulb-- which for my tortoise was 12 inches.)-- But this bulb is recommended again and again by other rep. keepers, and that is why I purchased it. It was quite a bit cheaper from Amazon than either of my local chain pet stores. I can't really attest to how effective it is, as I've only been using it 3 weeks or so, but so far, I'm really happy. (I put it in my old ten gallon fish tank hood light and built a rack to hold the light over my tort's table, and I think it looks good, the lighting below is good-- So hopefully he's getting all that UVB he needs!)If anything affects this opinion, I'll be sure to edit this.

This light is the real deal; don't let anyone talk you into buying a full-spectrum light that is not specifically for reptiles! I bought one on a recommendation that WAS a full-spectrum, but was actually for plants. I was assured that it would provide enough for my tegu. He developed MBD, metabolic bone disease, which affects reptiles who do not get the recommended 12 hrs a day UVA/UVB. Symptoms are decreased appetite or complete refusal of food, reduced activity & "depression", and dragging limbs, (for reptiles that have them, obviously; not snakes:)! There is a long list of other symptoms, but these were the ones my tegu lizard was exhibiting. I caught it in the early stages, and bought the ReptiSun 5.0 for my small tegu. It has been around 20 days, and he is eating & active again. His strength is not quite back to normal, but we are on our way to full recovery:)!
