Why is 18-8 stainless steel or 304 stainless steel magnetic?

  • The acquisition of weak magnetic properties in 18/8 and 304 stainless steels post-precision processing is attributed to the microstructural alterations induced during such operations. Both these stainless steels are variants of austenitic stainless steel, primarily composed of iron, 18% chromium, and 8% nickel. Inherently, austenitic stainless steels exhibit non-magnetic characteristics.
  • However, during cold working processes such as bending, stamping, cutting, or other forms of mechanical deformation, the austenitic microstructure undergoes partial transformation. This transformation leads to the emergence of martensitic or ferritic phases within the steel, both of which are magnetic in nature.
  • Furthermore, thermal fluctuations inherent in processing techniques can also promote the austenitic to martensitic phase transition. This phenomenon is further exacerbated by stress-induced martensitic transformation, where the applied pressure during processing facilitates this phase shift.
  • Consequently, the once non-magnetic austenitic stainless steel begins to exhibit weak magnetic properties due to the presence of these newly formed martensitic regions. It is important to note that this magnetism is typically feeble and does not compromise the chemical properties or corrosion resistance of the material. The occurrence of magnetism in these stainless steels, following processing, is a physical alteration and should not be misconstrued as a material defect.
  • It is crucial to be cautious of stainless steel products that do not exhibit weak magnetism after precision processing, as they may potentially be made of 201 stainless steel. 201 stainless steel is a type of austenitic stainless steel with low nickel(approximately ranging from 3.5% to 5.5%) and high manganese content. Due to its lower nickel content, it is relatively less expensive, but correspondingly, it has inferior corrosion resistance and weldability compared to higher nickel austenitic stainless steels, such as 304 or 18-8 stainless steel. Therefore, using a magnet to test stainless steel is not a scientifically valid method.

These are very good quality. No complaints here. Used these to attach shelves to the wall. Mine were the 1 3/4" size and none of them stripped out when screwing them in.

Fab screws for mounting external solar powered security lights around my house!Theyre black round top screws with a rust-proof black finish.Theyre perfect for driving into the external wood fascia of the homes exterior and hold well! Theyre short enough that they drive easily into wood without having to pre-drill a hole. At least w my 7 year old Black n Decker cordless screwdriver! Fab product! 5 Stars!

No issues installing ten 60-lb magnetic door catches/latches with these hard quality screws. The tiny cheap soft screws that came with the magnetic latches couldn’t be used. I am so glad these screws by by TPOHH works so well, no stripping of the head at all.

I used to install rubber step covers on exterior stairs. Stainless provides good rust resistance in wet Oregon.

I needed #6 x 1/2 inch screws for a project. My local hardware supplier did not have them in stock and would not get them for over a month. They were exactly what I needed. The only "down side" was that I only needed 36 screws for my project. Since the smallest quantity I could order was 100, I now have 64 screws that I have no idea what I will do with. Would have been nice if I could have ordered in quantities of multiple dozens, so I didn't have so much excess.
