As has been mentioned before, this tool is not for beginners. I use a PowerMatic 2020 short bed, and the machine will literally rip your limbs from their sockets if you get caught up in it. This 3/4" Sorby Bowl Gouge is not the kind of tool you jam into your project and expect forgiveness. It came sharp; with a tiny bit of touch-up, it became a razor. Treated as such, many of my earlier chisels became mules; this thing is a pedigree. Should you buy, go forward with a soft touch..... that's all you need.

At first I wasn't that happy with the purchase. It was a little large for what I imagined perhaps not reading the dimensions as well as I should. My earliest use left me somewhat frustrated as it was catching. I was thinking of returning it but figured I would give in another try. The second time I was more careful with where the edge was facing as I turned and I gradually become for skilled in its use. Now I think it is great and the probem from my inexperience with a high quality longer gouge. In fact with the length it works well for roughing shaping material due because one can keep it steady near ones hip. And its sharpness is excellent and it is holding its edge very well. I did grind more of wings on the sides which seem to help with control in certain areas.

Ok, having said that, this did need to be honed on arrival. The burr inside the flute needed to be removed, a round ceramic rod took care of that. The outside was ground well but honing helped a lot, too. One must get the hang of using a smaller tool first to reap the benefits of this tool, not for beginners!! I am using this on a Rockwell 3/4 HP lathe, only stalled it a few times. Experience begets appreciation. Need to keep the flute clear, BIG piles of shavings, FUN!! Using a NOVA MIDI with 5" jaws and tail stock support.

The thickness provides extra stability when turning the bottom of bowls, and the grind is great for making the transition from the inside sides to the bottom. Holds a sharp edge. Very happy.

This is a large, solid bowl gouge, which is excellent for roughing out larger turnings. It is made from high quality steel which keeps a sharp edge. It arrived fairly sharp, with a profile that was a bit more square than I am accustom to. Even so, before sharpening it, I roughed out a couple larger (18") beech bowls, using green log blanks. Even with it's "as received" level of sharpness, it cut well, cutting long strings of wood with each pass. I swept back the edges on my initial sharpening, and now it cuts even better. This is now the gouge that I use for most of my turning.
