This water filter works perfectly in our GE fridge model GFE28GYNJFS. The instructions specify pressing on the word 'Water' on the fridge for 3 seconds to clear the warning message, but I did not need to do this as the 'over 99 days' warning message immediately vanished the second I closed the fridge door after inserting the new filter. The microscopic instructions on a tiny sheet of paper were difficult to read, and I spent more time trying to interpret if I had a press in or twist type of filter than I did actually replacing it. In the end, all I had to do was clear out the food on the top left shelf of the fridge, open the filter cover on the left top wall and swing that cover open on its back hinge. I then grabbed the bottom of the water filter (which is horizontal with back end facing front of fridge) and rotate it counter-clockwise a quarter turn as far as it would go (CCW from perspective of if you were looking down from top of fridge), then I pulled the filter straight out. I did not twist it. I removed the plastic wrap and cap of one of the Aqua Crest filters in the 3-pack and inserted this new filter straight into the filter socket (again, no twisting), rotated the filter back to the left side wall, closed the filter cover door, then closed the fridge.I ran the water into a plastic cup and there was a brief explosion with a small amount of water landing on the floor, then the cup filled with black water but this was temporary. I let the cup fill a few times before I was satisfied that it was running clear. I did not need to run the water through the filter for gallons and gallons. The new filter is incredible! The water flows out at a really fast pace. I don't recall the genuine GE filter ever doing that.I am extremely grateful for the existence of this Aqua Crest third party option. When my fridge started reporting that the water filter needed replacement 6 months after we purchased this appliance, I was furious! The fridge is located in a second home we purchased but had not moved into at the time and we had only used the fridge for a couple of weeks in that time period.I read on GE's own website that they don't detect whether the water filter is actually in need of replacement, they just go based on time, and start hassling consumers at the 6 month point. I could not believe such an idiotic form of engineering. For years, my wife and I had a PUR water filter attached to our sink and it only reported the need for replacement based on usage, not time. I was therefore appalled by the lazy engineering of the GE fridge. No way would I succumb to paying $60 twice a year to use GE filters. I paid enough for the fridge, I don't want a recurring expense. We have since moved into the home with the GE fridge and are using the filtered water on a daily basis, but I am still skeptical that the water filter needs to be replaced every 6 months. My plan is to get one year usage out of each of the Aqua Crest filters by following a hack I saw online about replacing the RFID chip from a water filter bypass (which Amazon sells).

Open the access door and grasp the end of the filter and swing the end out away from the inside wall until it can go no further. Then pull straight out - no turning or twisting. When installing make sure the white and gray plastic parts of the insertion port are still aligned - it might close partially and that makes it impossible to install. Use a screwdriver and 'gently' realign until it's completely open. Then make sure the filter is oriented front/back correctly (it's labeled) and push in - no turning or twisting. Swing the filter back into the bay and close the access door. I had to run a gallon or so to get the charcoal out of the lines. Reset your water filter alarm on the front panel and its off to the races.

This was my first time replacing my fridge water filter, and it made the process super easy. I was a bit worried it might not fit and that I'd need a specific brand, but this one worked great. I simply removed the old filter, popped this one in, and ran the water for a minute to clear out any air bubbles. Quick, easy, and no issues—highly recommend for a hassle-free replacement!
