I wanted something to track my workouts in and this is great. Because I only do 3 reps, and I repeat my workout sessions for two week cycles I can use one page for two workouts which is great.

I tracked most of my workouts couple improvements I would make you should measure before, and after every workout, and it doesn’t give you a place to do that outside of that very useful

This is a good-quality hard-cover, A5-size fitness journal with wire-ring binding. It has a very attractive layout and space for recording data on eight exercises per workout plus a six-month calendar, pages for 8 fitness goals, progress tracking, and body measurements and PRs. I think it’s appropriate for many exercisers who don’t need to record more than eight different exercises per workout session and don’t need pages to record other types of exercise-related information. Why use a fitness journal, how do you choose the best one for you, and how does the FitMate stack up?I’ve been a dedicated exerciser for decades. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve never used a fitness journal before. I have a pretty good idea of how many pounds I lift for each exercise and what weight dumbbell or kettlebell or medicine ball to reach for, but I don’t like the enjoyment of my workouts to be reduced by attempts to meet arbitrary goals that don’t really matter to me. Of course, I know this isn’t the most effective way to train. And as I’ve begun to add new exercises and new equipment (like steel clubs and maces) to my workout routine, I decided I needed a more organized approach. Enter the fitness journal.A fitness journal might seem like a very simple thing, but it’s actually fairly complex with lots of variation in layout and construction. Since different people have different needs and preferences, it’s hard to satisfy everyone with one design. But the basics are the same for most fitness journals. I’ll break down a few of the key considerations for buying a journal and how the Fitmate Fitness Journal deals with them.1. Layout of the Workout pages. Most fitness journals are comprised mainly of workout pages that record information about each workout. There are usually enough pages for six months if you work out five times a week. Then you buy a new journal or, if you want to save money, erase the entries and reuse the pages. If you need more customization and don’t need a paper journal, you can choose an app to record your workouts. The main things you want to record about a strength-training workout are usually the weight used, the number of reps for each set, and the number of sets for each different exercise done. A key consideration is how many exercises and how many sets are on a page. The FitMate can fit eight different exercises and six sets for each exercise. If you need to record data for more than eight exercises or six sets, look at a journal that can accommodate more than eight exercises. Some accommodate 10 exercises; I’m not sure any accommodate more than six sets. The layout of the FitMate workout page is extremely attractive. There is a light blue border around most of the page. Your workout data is entered into blue boxes with rounded corners and ample space between each box. The downside of this is that it’s not particularly space-efficient. So, for example, there’s no space after each exercise for notes (although there are three lines for notes at the bottom of the page). The FitMate workout pages have two rows for cardio workouts after the eight rows for strength training exercises. This is nice but comes at the expense of two rows that could otherwise be used for strength training. The pages also have lines for liters of liquid, weight and body fat percentage, and a rating of your workout. Each page has space for the start and finish time rather than the duration of each exercise session, which I found less useful.2. Other pages. The first page is an undated six-month calendar to mark the days on which you exercised. The next two pages have space for 8 exercise goals with subheadings for your plan and your progress. Following the workout pages is a page that repeats the second page of the exercise goals, which appears to be an error, and a page to track progress on 4 of your eight goals. I think they intended to have two pages so you could track all eight fitness goals. The last page has space for BMI, body fat percentage, and 14 muscle circumference measurements. You can record 12 different measurements for each. The bottom of the page has space for recording 12 pieces of data about five personal records.3. Construction. The planner is A5 size (about 6” x 8”), 5/8” deep, is protected by a hard black cover embossed with “FITNESS LOG,” has a wire-ring binding, and uses 120 GSM paper.—The A5 size is pretty standard and is a good compromise between allowing enough space for data without being too large to carry around.—I prefer the nondescript cover to one that’s more colorful or cute.—The hard cover protects the journal. The cover is supposed to be water-resistant. I tested this by putting some drops of water on it and letting them sit for 15 seconds. They wiped off without any damage to the cover, so it’s cleanable, at the least. I don’t know if water would penetrate the cover if left on it for a longer time.—The wire binding doesn’t add much space to the depth of the book, adds a bit to the width, allows the pages to lie flat, and doesn’t get in the way when you’re making entries. I prefer not having wire binding in order to reduce size, but don’t feel too strongly about it. You can insert a pen or pencil into the wire rings, which is convenient.—The heavy 120 GSM paper is pretty standard and should avoid ink show-through.—The journal doesn’t have a strap to keep it closed. I find straps aren’t necessary and get in the way.In my rating, I took off one star mainly because each page only recorded eight exercises, not quite enough for all my exercise sessions, but also because I thought the wire binding made the journal a bit bulky and because of the erroneous inclusion of a second page for goals 5-8 instead of a page to track progress for those goals. Most of these are personal preferences. Overall, I thought it is a good exercise journal and enjoy using it. As my needs change, I may move to an app that allows recording more data, but I would otherwise prefer a paper journal.

The good thing about this activity book is that it is highly customizable and you can change what you put in there as your workouts evolve. This will require commitment on your part to keep it up. I need to do it but haven't because I am failing at my goals. Sigh. However, it is a form of accountability. You don't want to see the dates with the blank pages. There is a notes section but a small daily meals part would be good since that is so much a part of physical health right now. I think this is important because you list your goals here too. It reminds you of what's important to you and you track your progression on meeting those goals. As I said, the one variable required is your commitment. It will give you a wealth of information and help you track your weaknesses and see where you need to improve if you stick with is. This is a large one that you can see and don't have to squeeze your sriting into, which I prefer.
