Intermatic's self-adjusting wall switch timer allows you to set it and forget it! Never bother with resetting again, unless you want to. This timer utilizes an astronomical feature to keep track of daily sunrise/sunset changes. The timer is for use with single-pole or 3-way applications, allowing you to control multiple devices with one timer. The large LCD display provides an easy readout of monitor activity. Dawn to dusk by date is a handy feature or vise-versa.

This was to be a direct replacement for the same Intermatic timer from about 15 years ago. It looks much better since it sits flush with the wall now (doesn't stick out like the old one) and it works just fine.

Just purchased three of these to control exterior house fixtures. Installed a pair this weekend and finally figured out the programming... one night's worth of "on at dusk, off at dawn", to confirm we set them correctly. The programming is a bit confusing, as there are multiple 'layers' that must be scrolled through. If using the dusk-to-dawn feature, make sure to set the correct time/date/year/day functions, then the DST/standard time, then you'll have to program WHAT you want the timer to do at either dusk or dawn. (turn something ON or turn it OFF.) The 'dawn' factor appears first, and I got this confused, as this is when I want the controller to turn OFF the lights. 'Dusk' appears later, so the functions kind of program backwards. The instructions are fairly helpful, but didn't appear to be entirely accurate, so I just kept scrolling until I eventually set all the factors. This Intermatic timer is considerably easier to set up than a different brand I previously purchased, Leviton. Returned the Leviton after struggling with it for the better part of a week. The Intermatic took only a day or so of cycles for me to figure out.

Once in a while we come across really neat products that make one feel especially good about the purchase. This is such a product -- a nice, clever device. It works very well automatically, adjusting to normal sunrise/sunset variation. And it operates like a normal manual switch for manual operation. In my case that is useful because there is a duplex plug outdoors on the light circuit, which I use in the daytime for electric yard tools. It is rather large so be sure you have room for the wires. Mine is located along side a manual light switch in a double box and that works. I think it might be tight in a single box, especially one that is shallow depth or one that already includes several large wire nuts. I use it to control carriage type lights located near the road on either side of my driveway. Several neighbors have commented how nice it is that they are always on at dusk.

The Intermatic ST01A (A = almond color) is a good choice for an in-wall 24 hour timer switch if you have old style wiring such as knob and tube that does not bring the neutral wire into the switch box. The switch electronics are entirely powered by a replaceable battery and completely isolated from the AC voltage. The electronics operate a mechanical contact for the AC current that makes an audible click when it turns on or off. This switch can control any type of load within its voltage and current rating.     Unlike my several previous Intermatic 24 hour "mechanical" (i.e., non-digital) timers (model EJ351) that uses a semiconductor device to control the AC current and would self-destructed from the current surge when the 150 Watt light bulb they were controlling burned out, the ST01 switch with its mechanical contact is immune to that.     The switch's ability to automatically adjust the on time and / or off time to the dusk and dawn time for every day of the year is a great features and the automatic daylight savings time adjustment feature advances or setbacks the clock one hour at the beginning and end of daylight savings time. Any on or off settings dependent on the clock will track the new clock setting.     The only obstacle to installing this switch is its large depth that does not leave adequate room in my 2.2 inch deep switch box to make the connections to the AC wires. The solution is to use a Legrand / Wiremold V5751, Single-Gang or V5751-2, 2 gang or V5751-3, 3 Gang (depending on your present switch box) 1" deep Extending / Adapter box. The single gang and 2 gang boxes are available at The Home Depot and the 3 gang box is available on Amazon, I have posted pictures from the Legrand website of these 3 boxes. Intermatic is naive in not supplying a selection of extending / adapter boxes for the ST01 digital timer switch because it is intended for older wiring which can have shallower switch boxes.     The Intermatic sales brochure lists the ST01 as being capable of doing 40 "events" (I.e., 20 on / off cycles per week) but after reading the instructions and programming my timer I think the number of events is actually 14. This amounts to one on and one off per day. The instructions are straightforward but do require you to pull up a chair next to your timer and go through each step of the programming carefully. The advantage of the astronomical feature and automatic daylight savings time adjustment is that you only have to program it once. The instructions can be downloaded from the Intermatic website and will give you a good idea of what the timer is capable of.     If you have modern wiring that brings the neutral wire into the switch box several other Intermatic digital timer switches are available that don't require periodic battery replacement like the ST01 does. These timers have a built-in non-replaceable rechargeable backup battery that is kept charged by the switch electronics. The only drawback to this is that rechargeable batteries don't last forever and when it goes out you need to replace the entire timer switch to maintain power outage backup capability. The replaceable battery for the ST01 supposedly lasts 2 years and costs $5 at The Home Depot.     I bought the Levinton light almond midsize wall plate (R59-PJ26-T) for the single gang switch box at The Home Depot and it is a reasonable color match although not a Martha Stewart perfect color match.

This is a great in-wall timer with the Astro Feature. I bought 3 of these about a month ago for various outdoor lights around the house and then purchased a forth one recently. If you like the idea of dawn and dusk for controlling your lights but don't like the timer's pre-programmed Dawn and Dusk time settings, you can adjust the programmed time to suit your tastes. Then when the Astro feature of the timer automatically adjusts for the setting sun and dawn times, it will adjust to this new setting that you changed. Hint: you can actually see what the dawn and dusk times (off and on) will be throughout the year in your timer by changing the date you enter during the set-up. Then you can compare that with the actual astronomical time table (sunrise/sunset) for your geographical area and further adjust if needed. You can google this on-line to find the table. Program instructions that come with the timer leave a little to be desired but you can go to the Intermatic website on-line to get more detailed instructions. The timer itself is pretty large and can be challenging to install in the wall j-box that may already have lots of wiring and wire nuts. Can be a very tight fit. Also the on and off function is accomplished by the internal battery and not AC power. That is why you don't need the "neutral" (white) wire. Just the "hot" wire going to the light. Overall a great timer for what it does at a reasonable price. Five (5) Stars!
