I used this to replace a faulty fire/carbon monoxide alarm on the second (top) floor of my house. Since there are no combustion sources on this floor, I saw no reason to pay extra for a CO alarm.

Despite what some other reviewers have written, this installation is easy, and it works with other alarms, specifically with Firex model FADC. I disconnected the old wiring harness from house wiring by removing three twist-on wire connectors, connected the new wiring harness to the house wiring via the same three twist-on connectors. I removed the old mounting plate by loosening two screws and replaced it with the new one by tightening the same two screws. I removed the battery-protection strip, plugged the harness into the detector, fitted the detector into the base with 1/4 turn, and pressed the test button. It works!.

I had three of these installed in July. Two of the three had woken us in the middle of the night on several occasions, one with a false smoke alarm, and the other with a generic "Smoke Sensor Fault" per the user manual. When I tried to return the one that had failed right away, I found that Amazon does not have a return option. The only option Amazon offers is to call the manufacturer. I buy a lot from Amazon, and this is the first time I have been shut out of returning a defective product (or anything else). I was on hold with Kidde for 20 minutes to be told to "blow it out" and give it 24 hours to see if that fixes it. After being awakened 3 times in the middle of the night by these defective alarms, I'm not too happy with the service at either Amazon or Kidde.

The hardest part about installing this (for my handyman) was removing the super old, broken, and likely non-functional existing smoke detector that came with my house. This looked pretty easy to install and all tests have gone well.I could have gone with one that just ran off batteries…and those are great…but I really prefer to have the reliable consistency of a hardwired one that uses battery backup only when needed.Definitely recommend this.
