About this item

  • Ergonomic - The Starrett top quality tools have IP67 protection against coolants, water, chips, dust, and dirt often found in machine shop environments.
  • Make Measurements Easy - The large, clear, easy-to-read LCD digital readout on this caliper makes it simple to get accurate readings quickly and easily. No squinting or straining is necessary!
  • Turns Off Automatically - The caliper will turn off after 30 minutes of no slide movement. A one second push of either the “in/mm or “zero on/off” button or any movement of the slide will reactivate the display with no loss of position.
  • Quality Made - The Starrett Electronic Caliper measuring surfaces are made from hardened stainless steel, offering exceptional durability and greater corrosion resistance.
  • Adjustable - Its induction type linear encoder system and inch/millimeter metric conversion makes Starrett precision measuring tools the right choice for any job.

The Starrett 798A-12/300 dial caliper measures 0 to 12 inches and 0 to 300 mm with 0.0005” or 0.01 mm accuracy. This easy-to-use measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the slim, streamlined design and large LCD. This caliper is IP 67-certified, which means that the electronic components are resistant to debris, and are resistant to submersion under standard conditions for up to 30 minutes.

The caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. A lock screw can hold the slide in position. The hardened stainless steel measuring surfaces offer corrosion resistance and long life, while the heavy-duty bar and slide are a sturdy 3.5 mm thick. Single battery is easy to access, on the front of the plastic casing, next to the LCD. The last measurement position is retained when the caliper is shut off, and it is simple to zero the caliper at any position with the clearly marked zero button. It is simple to zero the caliper at any position with a push of the zero button. Easy-to-read LCD is large, with 0.310” tall characters. The caliper shuts off automatically after 30 minutes of nonuse. Linear accuracy meets the internationally used Deutsches Institut fur Normung 862: Vernier Calipers Requirements and Testing (DIN 862) standards. Induction-type linear encoder system offers high precision in measurements by tracking small movements in position by using a conductor moving through a magnetic field. The outside measuring jaws on this caliper are approximately 2-1/2” (63.5 mm) long, while the inside measuring jaws are approximately 3/4” (19 mm) long.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

The L. S. Starrett Company was founded in 1880, originally manufacturing bench vises, squares, and other tools. They acquired other companies throughout the years, expanding their services into making precision measurement instruments and tools, such as calipers, micrometers, saw blades, and gauges. Starrett is headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts and has manufacturing facilities in Brazil, the United Kingdom, China, and other locations.

The hard plastic box it comes in, is a bonus. For the cost of this, appreciate the protection it offers. I compared to my $40 Empire brand, from Home Depot, and reads just as well…… with additional 10,000th place. As of now, I would recommend.

These are extremely well-made digital calipers. I have quite a few items from starrett and I have never had any problems with them and the thing I like about these calipers is they come in a really sturdy, well-made storage box that has proper hinges as opposed to pieces of flexible plastic that snap after a time of use overall I’m extremely pleased and I would definitely recommend this to anyone

I was skeptical based on the reviews but after having it on my hand, checking it on a mic stand and even using gauge blocks to check it's accuracy at varying lengths. It's impressed me beyond all standard. It's consistent and feels good in the hand. Some calipers are often light or feel cheap but this thing has some heft to it and definitely feels solid just holding it and when using it. It's a shame it doesn't have carbide tips but I won't mark against it for not having them.

The only issues we have ever had on these units is when my Techs abuse them, otherwise they are solid.

AL MOMENTO VA TUTTO BENE, PRECISO E COSTANTE ANCHE SE NON SCORRE CON REGOLARE CONTINUITA' DI UNO STRUMENTO PROFESSIONALE, MA SOPRATTUTTO MANCA LA SCRITTA MADE IN USA E QUESTO MI PREOCCUOPA.

I'm vry happy with this digital caliper. I reviewed the specs and comments on about ten different brand calipers and chose this one based on the 5-star reviews. I concur with the other reviewers of this caliper - excellent!! Solid build, no slop in movement, able to re-baseline the counter if looking for a "delta" measurement. This one is a keeper and well worth the higher price. You pay the money to get the quality and you can trust the measurements.

This is one of three items I bought recently that I have no issues with and nothing bad to report. So far they seem pretty good and I must admit one of my better purchases of this companies products of recent times.

Starrett showed up today right on time with 2 day shipping.Product was brand new, came in a red hard plastic case containing molded foam to protect and hold it in place. Instructions were included and easy to understand. The product turned on and worked right out of the box. Holds zero well; very smooth operation using the position wheel. Caliper itself seems to be made out of heavy stainless steel machined very smooth and precise - no slop. Electronic unit moves smoothly and there is no play in its movement on the stem. Graduations on the stem of the caliper are very small but readable. Before I purchased the Starrett from Amazon ($139), I visited Harbor Freight and saw what a low end unit looked like - only about $15. Not a good comparison but my idea is when you buy a tool, you will not regret spending more for quality and reliability. The unit's label states that it is assembled in the US. No regrets here!

Ok so I have worked in a Machine shop now for roughly 2 years and we have mostly always used Mitutoyo calipers myself included however my buddy just got a really nice pair of these Starrett's except he got his with SPC output which for me is useless because I'll never use it. These are the one of the best calipers on the market right now that I have ever used and I honestly believe them to be slightly better than Mitutoyo's for obvious reasons of always zero'ing out when closing the jaw sometime mitutoyo's don't always do that. In my personal experience I would choose the Starrett's over the Mitutoyo anyday of the week not saying Mitutoyo doesn't make a good caliper because they sell good products as well but Starrett's are made in the USA and Mitutoyo's are made in Japan/China tell me which you would preffer? GET THESE CALIPERS YOU WILL NOT REGRET YOUR PURCHASE!
