Spend less time filing fret ends!
This is the best tool for trimming the ends off fretwire.

A Stewart-MacDonald exclusive, our custom-made steel cutter has improved features you won't find on hardware store nippers.
The jaws are specially hardened for fret work, and they're profiled and flush-ground to cut the wire close to the fretboard. The result is a cleaner cut without pulling the wire, so you'll need less filing. Longer rubber-coated handles allow better access to the frets over a guitar body.
1" (25.4mm) jaw width, 8" (203.20mm) length.

Works on stainless frets, too!
The StewMac Fret Cutter is suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

When you’re working on someone’s heirloom guitar it is nice to know you are using a quality tool and not something you hope will do the job. StewMac has never let me down. Strongly recommend.

Used for fret removal and cutting off fret ends. I can see a little wear when I cut stainless steel, but still cuts nice. Worth the money.

This does the job. Pricey but works. I tried a lesser brand and I had to return them. These cut.

These nippers are great but I had to sand them flat in order to use them to pull frets

Stewmac products cost more, but they also do an excellent job and last. I had some stainless steel frets I tried, unsuccessfully, to cut and install. Regular wire cutters don't work, and I tried several before going with the Stewmac cutters. They're touch, durable, and the ends are designed to be thin enough to make a relatively clean cut. "You get what you pay for" is a phrase that is so very often overused. However, it's been my experience that it's true when it comes to Stewmac products. I could have gone with less durable frets but the Stewmac cutters did the job. I recommend cutting the tangs first before cutting the crown of the frets if you're trying to cut really durable stainless steel frets.

I've been looking for the perfect zip tie cutter for a long time. I've got flush cut pliers that do the job when space is plentiful, but there are a lot of projects where zip ties barely fit, and standard flush cut pliers can't fit into the space. This is where these end nip versions come in - they can access zip ties 90 degrees compared to standard flush cutters, meaning I have a second tool for cutting zip ties if space is an issue. Standard end nippers leave zip ties proud of the surface, and these are flush cutting, so they don't leave that sharp edge behind.I'm sure these work for guitar frets like intended, but I'm using them for zip ties and expect them to last a really long time as a result. Spend the extra money and get a good quality set!

Currently doing an 8 string build, which I got SS fret wire for, and everyone knows ss is notoriously tricky to work with, so I didn't want to gamble on a product that might not even work, so as overpriced as I feel like stewmac tools are, some of them are maybe worth it, like this one. Clipped the lengths and tangs of 24 frets, and there's only a few marks on the cutters after all that. Working with ss, you gotta manage your expectations. It will slowly damage even the highest of quality tools over time, so it's not gonna last forever, but from what I can tell it will definitely last a very long time.
