The hatchet weight feels good. The handle thickness fits good, blade quality good .would be nice though if the blade was sharpened when arrives.

Beautiful hatchet. I haven't it yet, but I don't for see any problems. It comes with a puck shaped sharpening stone which is a huge plus, also comes with a belt carrier, so you can wear it on your hip it also has a leather blade guard...another huge plus. I'd recommend this product to anyone!

I almost did not buy this because the low price seemed that it might preclude the possibility of quality, but I was wrong. The hatchet is well balanced. The steel held up after I relentlessly pounded on walnut and the handle is comfortable. The only minor complaint that I have is that the choice of wood for the handle was not the best. The woodgrain is not completely straight from top to bottom as there is quite a bit of run off which of course makes cracking more likely.

I just received the hatchet today, it is everything that Reviewers said it was.Since I know nothing of metallurgy, I can only go with what I see and feel, and my impressions. At first sight it was good, and really, I could stop there. :)The handle is very good, it's the proper length (for me anyway) and it just feels good in the hand. The blade 'seems to be' fine, it was sharp, not as sharp as some have said, and not as dull as others have said. I used the stone that was provided and I could swear I dulled it more. I'll be honest and say that I couldn't tell which side was which, so that says a lot about how much I know. It's still sharp though, I can't think of one use that I would need it to be razor-sharp, but then again, I bought this because I 'just wanted it', no other reason. The rough, 'used a lot' look of the blade is perfect, actually, it's just as I had hoped, I really like that style of blade, whether it's a knife or an hatchet. As far as the (deep grained) wooden handle goes, I'll just have to take their word that it's made from, "English Beech", but it seems to be a very dense wood, I'd liken it to a baseball bat, but more coarse, more grain. Bats are usually made from Maple, now, I think, which is a dense, fine wood. Anyway, I don't think that there will be any problems from it at all. It's fairly 'grippy', it doesn't feel like it'd slip put of your hand that easy, of course, sweat may have other ideas...The holster is seemingly real leather, (I'm pretty sure) and it's made very well, it's just feels kind of wimpy compared to the hatchet itself, it needs to be thicker, but only because it fits the hatchet more. I don't doubt that it will last a long time, even if it is a little thinner than I would like, but it should do its job. The brass rivets that hold it together seem to also be made well, and done right. The snap will hopefully keep working, that is about the first thing to go with this stuff, snaps if made cheap won't last long at all, but we'll see.Overall, my impressions of it all is very good, I feel as though I actually got what I paid for, I am pretty sure that if you are an average person that needs a good hatchet, you will be happy enough with this.I 'may' even do some wood burning art or Dremel carving on the handle, but if my wife is right, and I am lazy, then I won't. We'll see...

I carve spoons for fun and was immediately interested in this hatchet due to the design of the handle. They seem to have taken cues from high end tool makers such as Kalthoff and Soulwood forge. My primary axe is a Kalthoff small carver, which has a very similar handle. I don't strictly need another carving axe but they're kind of addictive and I wanted to see if this could be a less expensive option for people new to the hobby.Once I had it in hand I was very pleased with the feel and ergonomics. The handle was almost as good as I had hoped. I would say it's only mildly less comfortable than my Kalthoff. Considering the Kalthoff costs 5 to 6 times as much, that's pretty dang good.To be a spoon carving axe required reshaping the bevel, so I did that with a large file. I can tell you now that the edge has definitely been hardened by the reaction of the file against it, but that it was somewhat inconsistent, with harder and softer spots along the bevel. After sharpening and using it I would say it is sufficiently hard for the task.Using it to rough out a spoon from a piece of plum wood was a joy. It works great for that purpose and afterwards only showed minor wear on the edge. I've included pictures of the spoon it carved.I would happily recommend this for any burgeoning spoon carvers that aren't ready to pay for a hand forged axe yet.

Well balanced and hung little hatchet. The edge needed a bit of work to be useable, but that is not uncommon in axes when shipped. The leather mask, however did not fit the head. I had to force the head into the mask and it still did not seat correctly, so much so that snap closure won’t even line up to secure. It is at least .5 inches short, so the blade is covered but not snapped secure around the handle/head area. The mask was clearly not tested or fitted in advance. Also, it is listed on Amazon description/details section “USA as country of origin.” The box is marked “China.” So that is misleading…or an outright lie. However, for the price and 1055 steel, it is not a bad little tool. I’ve used it to create spoon blanks from green wood with little issue except for stropping.

I bought two of these just a few months apart and they are 2 different sizes. One also has a defect in the metal. Really cool looking but they need to be more consistent and have better quality control. The looks is why I gave 3 stars.
