Prospective buyers of the A8 Gate opener made by Topens need to know it is of excellent quality. My Topens was purchased in June of 2021 and works perfectly to this day. It's something I no longer think about because it is so reliable.I want everyone to know how satisfied I am with the Topens Gate Opener, and I will repeat my purchase when the timecomes.

I have bought TOPENS A8 auto gate opener, photo beam sensor TC102, exit wand car detector, touch panel wired keypad TC175P, and auto electric gate lock ET24. Two (2) 12VDC solar panels and two (2) 12 volt 12 AH F2 terminal rechargeable SLA AGM batteries are from Amazon other supplier. TOPENS provides a very good written User’s Manual that explains all products’ specs installation connection programming adjusting and setting. Very good tech support, answers questions quickly, and ships replacement promptly. I’ve designed and built a “Parcel Drop Here” container that works for not only holding parcels but also all electric components and wiring inside to protect them from exposing to sun shine and rain. The parcel drops in front and being taken out from back. The back wall is transparent plastic such that I can see from distance if there would be parcel dropped. I construct a 3’x6’ 3-inch thick concrete slab such that the container can sit on it. Furthermore, because of having concrete slab I use 4”x4” 6-feet post to support 16’ wide tube gate without worry its weight might bent the post. The wood frame structure is also needed to strengthen the post. Two (2) solar panels wired in series to charge two (2) connected in series 12V batteries that provide 24VDC to the entire auto gate system. Differentiating from a residential garage door opener, I install the Auto Close feature with a photocell beam sensor (PBS) and set it to 20 seconds to close the gate after being opened. Simply use a hang board, one can do Keep Open (block the PBS beam) and Auto Close (not block the PBS beam). The lawn mower guy finds this Keep Open is very useful when he is doing his lawn service. I have installed an exit wand such that our visiting guests can drive out the gate freely. All components in the system are under 24VDC operation. I love this off-grid system very much. It works great!

This product is very difficult to set up the electrical. It’s also very slow and now after 30 days, it has just stopped not worth the money.

I have installed the product but it stopped working within a few weeks - the customer service for Topens is EXCELLENT. Jessica walked me through every step and singled out the problem. Even though this was through Christmas and New Year holidays and I dragged it out it a few months due to personal reasons, she still maintained fantastic customer/technical support. After we discovered the issue, she sent the replacement ASAP (and I mean within 1-2 days) and I am up and running again. I now have had this arm running flawlessly for over 3 weeks. I do not foresee another issue, but I know Jessica will help me again. On another note, she also extended the warranty in case I run into another issue; just fantastic customer support!

No problem putting it altogether, I did order the power option along with the gate and it too was easy to install. Works great, even from in the house as I don't have the key pad hooked up as yet. Would recommend this opener.

Overall it works decent enough. A8 seems fairly strong. Installed July 2021. Now May 2023 so almost 2 years of service. Fairly regularly open/closed. Gate is pretty heavy but brass bushings. It's making some crackly noises now so I'm not sure how long the actuator will last. I'll need to buy another one as a backup for when this one blows up. I'm using two 12v 7ah batteries to achieve 24v to power it. Using the adapter style PSU to power it. I have a cheap wifi pcb that works off smartphone app to open and close it remotely. That was like $10! It simulates a button push. Remotes are ok I guess but pricey for replacements. Overall it's ok but I don't think there is a stellar 5* setup anywhere.

This was pretty easy to set up. Instructions were better than typical for a Chinese-translated manual, and everything works. Adjustments are easy. The only irritation I found so far is the generic fobs I bought (not Topens own brand), which are supposed to be compatible, would not pair with it. I returned the fobs and got different ones that did pair ok.My only suggestion to Topens is to make the accessories like pin pads and find more competitively priced. While the basic kit is a great deal, they get you on all the extras that you’ll likely need. My advice is download the manual and figure out the parts you need before you buy. It will make the install easier.

Edit 3/28/24 It has been over 5 months and I have had no problems with this opener. The charger worked well with my 24 volt lithium ion battery. It does stall out while closing during a high wind and has to be cycled a second time. I cycled it dozens of times one day and the battery did not have a problem. The unlatch open key is directly on top and easily accessible. Since it is not a real key all would be the same which means that your key would open all gates. This could be problematic. I used it in conjunction with a latch that has a unique key to add to the security. I would buy this item again.I replaced a line of Mighty Mules 23 years long. I have gone through 7 mules. We are very lightning prone and there is no good way to ground these systems. I went with the Topens A8 because it looked like the mounting brackets were very similar to the Mules. Unfortunately there are slight differences and try as I might I was unable to use the Mule brackets on the Topens. If I had a fresh install, this opener would not have been any more difficult than the first Mule that I installed. With each Mule replacement, I just used the old brackets and control box and they were a breeze.Things I liked about the A8Soft start and stop. Once you open and close a couple of times, it knows where you are going and slows the speed to softly land without beating up the gate. The unlatch key if the gate stops functioning. This is probably the main reason I switched. My last opener quit and I jumped the fence just to land on my butt. It is a simple matter to release the opener and open the gate.Things I do not like.24 Volts. I could have mounted the A8 control box and a 12 Volt battery in the old Mule box. There is no battery box with the Topens. You need two 12 volt batteries in series to get the 24 volts. So you have to buy a separate box and run the wires to it. This is a messy install. The power supply to the board for charging the battery has a whopping 3 foot long cord. That is fine if you happen to have an outlet right at the gate but mine is about 10 foot away. The Mule has a transformer with screws on it so you can run as much wire as you need to the opener. The power supply is 36v to charge a 24 volt battery. There might be a charging circuit on the board to give the right voltage for the battery but I doubt it. I suspect the 36 volts will be dumped directly into the battery. I am using a 24 volt Lithium Ion battery so am not sure I trust that.I am just using the battery stand alone for now and will remove it when it needs charged and once charged put back in the battery box. Lithium Ion keeps voltage pretty flat so I think this will be fine for a while. I went a week and half with very little voltage drop.Several times I was tempted to return this but did not. Now that it is installed it looks good and I am happy, at least temporarily.
